Drink, Swear, Lie & Steal

How many of you are wondering what this morning’s blog is going to be about? What connection is there between a butterfly and those four words – lie, swear, drink and steal?

Last night while Dave and I were watching television the words from a Michael Peterson song recorded in 2012 came to mind, “Drink, Swear, Steal & Lie”. I’m always looking for a good play on words and I found one in this song. This song is about a man in love and this is his declaration:

“I want to drink from your loving cup
Swear I’ll never give you up
Steal all your kisses underneath the moon
I wanna lie here close to you look at what you made me do
Darling you’re the reason why
I drink, swear, steal and lie

We were watching a southern, down-home Bible study. Something that was said prompted the memory of this song and then sent my thinking in the direction of Psalm 23.

“The Lord is my shepherd. I will always have everything I need. He gives me green pastures to lie in. He leads me by calm pools of water. He restores my strength. He leads me on right path] to show that he is good. Even if I walk through a valley as dark as the grave,  I will not be afraid of any danger, because you are with me. Your rod and staff comfort me. You prepared a meal for me in front of my enemies. You welcomed me as an honored guest. My cup is full and spilling over. Your goodness and mercy will be with me all my life,  and I will live in the Lord’s house a long, long time.” Psalm 23 ERV

I can lie all I want as long as I lie down in green pastures to rest. I can drink all I want as I drink from the cool, still waters that He provides. I can steal all I want as long as I steal my thoughts so they aren’t captivated by fear. And I swear that I will live for the Lord all the days of my life.

Those four words – lie, swear, drink, steal – can be used to create the image of a life that is void of God or they can paint the portrait of a person who is completely sold out to following Christ.

The Apostle Paul gives us this instruction for living a godly life.

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.” Romans 12:1-2 MSG

Did you notice – we’ll be changed from the inside out. Just like a butterfly. There’s a metamorphosis that takes place when we give our lives to Christ. The fuzzy little caterpillar of our existence is changed into a beautiful butterfly that gives glory to God. The culture of the day looks at the caterpillar side of the image and God looks at our life from the transformed side.

Drink in God’s goodness; Lie in His pastures to rest; Steal away from life’s distractions to spend time in God’s presence and Swear to stand on God’s promises. This is the formula for a victorious Christian life!

A Good Nap Is Valuable

This was a busy weekend. Thursday we drove to the Phoenix area to visit with our daughters and their families. Our last visit up there was Christmas. We had such a good time.

Thursday when we arrived we got some shopping done while they were working. Dave and I had almost forgotten what the Phoenix heat was like. When we came out of one store it was 107*. The truck thermometer said it was 113*. This was just a friendly reminder of why we have chosen not to live in the metro area.

But the heat didn’t deter us from having a good time. We spent a good portion of the day on Friday checking out a campground for Fall camping trip. It was tucked away on a creek and only a few hours drive from Mesa. Yes! Trip planned and on the calendar.

Saturday we had a bar-b-que and pool party with both girls, their husbands and our three youngest grandkids. The giggles, the squeals, the jumping and splashing were as refreshing as the water. Nothing could top the hugs, the kisses, the smiles and the “I love you’s” that everyone exchanged. Such a sweet time!

As you’re reading all of this I can hear you asking “but what’s the point of this morning’s blog?”. Are you ready for it? It’s very profound – our heavenly Father wants us to enjoy life. He wants us to spend time with those we love and He wants us to immerse ourselves in His presence and His love.

“I have seen what is best for people to do on earth: They should eat, drink, and enjoy the work they have during their short time here. God has given them these few days, and that is all they have. 19 If God gives some people wealth, property, and the power to enjoy those things, they should enjoy them. They should accept the things they have and enjoy their work—that is a gift from God.” Ecclesiastes 5:18-19 ERV

The things we have are blessings from the Lord and we should enjoy what He has given us. Our heavenly Father doesn’t want us to spend all of our time striving to make a living. In fact, He tells us to trust Him to help in that and to rest and enjoy our families.

“If it is not the Lord who builds a house, the builders are wasting their time. If it is not the Lord who watches over the city, the guards are wasting their time. It is a waste of time to get up early and stay up late, trying to make a living. The Lord provides for those he loves, even while they are sleeping. Children are a gift from the Lord, a reward from a mother’s womb.” Psalm 127:1-3 ERV

I am so thankful for the weekend the Lord gave us and I am also thankful for the nice long nap I was able to take once we got home yesterday afternoon. Please understand God wants us to see His love and provision in everything; safety, jobs, family, health, recreation, and even naps. The Lord wants us to rest, rest in knowing that He is in control.

Put the words of the Apostle Paul into practice today. “Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:17 ERV

Give thanks in everything – even in a good nap!

I’m Alright!

I woke up this morning with the words to the chorus of a song running through my mind as I prayed and read my Bible. When I’m talking with the Lord and hearing His words come from the page of my Bible I know I’m alright.

I’m all, I’m all, I’m alright
It’s a beautiful day, not a cloud in sight
So I I guess I’m doing alright
I’m all, I’m all, I’m alright
by Jo Dee Messina

Life is messy sometimes. Things get hectic and cluttered, sometimes it seems that our boat is about to sink but the Lord has a message for us all.

Do not trouble yourself because of sinful men. Do not want to be like those who do wrong. For they will soon dry up like the grass. Like the green plant they will soon die. Trust in the Lord, and do good. So you will live in the land and will be fed. Be happy in the Lord. And He will give you the desires of your heart. Give your way over to the Lord. Trust in Him also. And He will do it. He will make your being right and good show as the light, and your wise actions as the noon day.

Rest in the Lord and be willing to wait for Him. Do not trouble yourself when all goes well with the one who carries out his sinful plans. Stop being angry. Turn away from fighting. Do not trouble yourself. It leads only to wrong-doing. For those who do wrong will be cut off. But those who wait for the Lord will be given the earth. ” Psalm 37:1-9 NLV

Trust the Lord. Rest in the Lord. Do Good. Be happy in the Lord.

Yes, the Lord will make all things right. He has the master plan. He wants us to trust regardless of what the circumstances look like. He is the circumstance changer. His is a plan to bring us good and not destruction.

Yesterday I heard a message from the book of Daniel. You know, Daniel in the Lion’s den. Circumstances didn’t look good for Daniel. All of his peers plotted against him; there was no alternative, the king had to punish him for breaking the law. The lion’s den was the death sentence.

“The other men tried to find something wrong with the way Daniel did his work for the king. But they could not accuse him of anything wrong, because he was honest and faithful and did everything he was supposed to do. Finally, they said to one another, “We will never be able to bring any charge against Daniel, unless it has to do with his religion.” Daniel 6:4-5 CEV

But God…

God intervened and closed the mouth of the lions. Daniel rested in a place meant for his destruction.

“At daybreak the king got up and ran to the pit. 20 He was anxious and shouted, “Daniel, you were faithful and served your God. Was he able to save you from the lions?”

21 Daniel answered, “Your Majesty, I hope you live forever! 22 My God knew that I was innocent, and he sent an angel to keep the lions from eating me. Your Majesty, I have never done anything to hurt you. The king was relieved to hear Daniel’s voice, and he gave orders for him to be taken out of the pit. Daniel’s faith in his God had kept him from being harmed.” Daniel 6:19-23 CEV

If I were writing these verses this morning I would have Daniel singing – I’m all, I’m all, I’m alright.

If God could protect Daniel from the lions he can certainly protect us from the situations and circumstances that we will face today. We need to follow the examples of Daniel and David; stay focused on God’s promises and His power.

“God, you give true peace to people who depend on you, to those who trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3 ERV

Say it with me – I will trust in the Lord. I’m alright!
