Love Letters

Today is rarely, if ever, associated with love. However, I refuse to give away even one day and not focus on the love of God.

Through the years my confidence in God’s word has grown. What was once a hope in the truth of the Scriptures has become a steadfast faith in the infallibility and eternal truth that is only found in God’s word.

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Matthew 24:35 NLV

God’s word will never fail; love never fails. God’s word is the written expression of His love. He has chosen to share His heart with us in the pages of His word.

Have you ever received a love letter?

I bet you read it more than once. It’s possible that you read it so many times that you nearly had it memorized before the next one came. I don’t think love letters have quite the impact they did years ago. Letter writing was the communication of the day. Not very fast but treasured.

God loves us so much that He took the time to write the most amazing love letter! Reading it over and over again we find new things that we didn’t see the first time and reading it long enough we are impacted by His great love.

“1 I will confess and praise You [O God] with my whole heart; before the gods will I sing praises to You. 2 I will worship toward Your holy temple and praise Your name for Your loving-kindness and for Your truth and faithfulness; for You have exalted above all else Your name and Your word and You have magnified Your word above all Your name!
3 In the day when I called, You answered me; and You strengthened me with strength (might and inflexibility to temptation) in my inner self. 4 All the kings of the land shall give You credit and praise You, O Lord, for they have heard of the promises of Your mouth [which were fulfilled]…6 For though the Lord is high, yet has He respect to the lowly [bringing them into fellowship with Him]; but the proud and haughty He knows and recognizes [only] at a distance. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me; You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me. 8 The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, endure forever—forsake not the works of Your own hands.” Psalm 138 AMP

The name of the Lord is to be lifted higher than any other name. The name of God the Father and His Son Jesus are to be honored – that’s why it’s considered “profane” when their names are used in cursing and damning. God is not the damn-er but the blesser.

In verse 2 of this chapter, it also says that God has magnified His Word more than His name. That’s the value that God puts on His Word. In Psalm 107 we read that He sent His word and healed them.

In verse 8, God promises to perfect that “which concerns me”. As a loving father reaches out to help His child, my heavenly Father reaches out to “treat me with kindness”, as one translation says.

Put down the texting, FB and other means of electronic communication today and read the love letter that was written to you! It will warm your heart and change your life.

A Good Name

It’s amazing how names evoke an emotional response. Take for instance Queen Elizabeth. Her name is known worldwide and in the coming years, when spoken, it will be a reminder of a woman who served with integrity.

Now, on the other hand, the names of Billy the Kid or Jesse James bring to mind a different image. They were famous but for a completely opposite reason. Their character was associated with destruction.

This morning I was reading in the book of Matthew and Jesus was asking his disciples about His reputation, His character. Jesus had just been confronted by the religious leaders of the day. They were questioning everything he did, looking for opportunities to discredit Him, to ruin His reputation and His good name.

“When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

¹⁴“Well,” they replied, “some say John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.”

¹⁵Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”

¹⁶Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

¹⁷Jesus replied, “You are blessed, Simon son of John, because my Father in heaven has revealed this to you. You did not learn this from any human being.” Matthew 16:13-17 NLT

Those closest to Him knew Him to be honorable, godly, perfect. His name was above reproach.

“Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. ²³I have sworn by my own name; I have spoken the truth, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to me.” Isaiah 45:22-23 NLT

These words were spoken about Jesus. His is the name above every name. His name is Wonderful, Counselor, Prince of Peace, Mighty God, Immanuel (God with us). There is no name higher or of any greater authority!

“For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures, where it says, ‘The stone that you builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.’ ¹²There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:11-12 NLT

If Jesus were visiting us today and asked us the same question He asked his disciples, “who do you say that I am”, what answer would we give?

Some would say a good man, an influencer of society. Maybe some would say a con man, a phony.

What answer would you give?

To me, He is my Saviour and friend. He is my brother who died for my redemption! His name is Jesus, Son of the Living God!

What’s In A Name?

One person, many names. Baby girl, daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother, aunt, neighbor, employee, manager, teacher…The list goes on. All of them are true. Ask anyone of a number of people and their description of me would be different because their relationship with me differs.

Our reputation is built on the way others see us. So what’s in a name?

Have you ever taken time to notice how many different names we find in the Bible to describe the character of God.

God Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, the Lord, the Healer, Savior, Provider, Protector, Lion of Judah, Lamb of God. Prince of Peace, Wonderful, Counselor, Everlasting Father, Jesus, the Messiah, the Risen Lord. Friend. I AM. Abba Father. Comforter, Helper.

What’s in a name? Plenty.

“For to us a Child will be born. To us a Son will be given. And the rule of the nations will be on His shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful, Teacher, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 NLV

Of the names listed above which is your favorite? Maybe the name that has the most meaning to you isn’t even in the list.

When I’m scared and feel weak He is the lion of Judah – my protector. When I’m sick He is the Great Physican. When I’ve done wrong and feel ashamed He is Abba Father. When I was lost in sin He was my Savior and Risen Lord.

The sweetest name is Jesus – it fills me with such great joy because in that name is love, acceptance, kindness, goodness.

What’s in a name?

“Moses answered, “I will tell the people of Israel that the God their ancestors worshiped has sent me to them. But what should I say, if they ask me your name?” ^14-15God said to Moses: I am the eternal God. So tell them that the Lord, whose name is “I Am,” has sent you. This is my name forever, and it is the name that people must use from now on.” Exodus 3:13-15 CEV

When I face what seems to be insurmountable problems He is I AM. Whatever I need at any given moment He is my I AM.

To a young shepherd boy He was a giant slayer. To a nation held in bondage and fear He was the I AM of deliverance. To a thief on the cross He was Savior.

I encourage you to make your own list of names that you have for our heavenly Father, for Jesus and for Holy Spirit, the ones that mean the most to you. Each day focus on one of those names, letting it impact that day’s activities.

“All those who are led by the Holy Spirit are sons of God. ¹⁵You should not act like people who are owned by someone. They are always afraid. Instead, the Holy Spirit makes us His sons, and we can call to Him, “My Father.” ¹⁶For the Holy Spirit speaks to us and tells our spirit that we are children of God.” Romans 8:14-16 NLV
