Home for Christmas

The last few nights Dave and I have been reminiscing about our Idaho home. It was more of a farmhouse, small and cozy.

We had four large blue spruce trees in the side yard, a big circular driveway, a cute front porch and one small bathroom but it was home. We got so much snow that Dave and our son would need to go up and shovel it off the roof.

We could be inside warming by the wood stove and look out at the colored lights shining on the snow covered branches. It definitely reminded us of a Currier and Ives Christmas card.

It was home!

Home is many things to many people. Some live in large and spacious mansions while others reside in small cottages. Our son lives on a boat and there are others like us who live in tiny homes. But one thing is the same, the comfort of home.

I remember the first time the song “I’ll be Home for Christmas” took on real meaning to my family. My brother had left for his tour of duty in Viet Nam in the summer of 1969. Mom continued with her Christmas baking just like normal and sent a couple of boxes of baked goods to him and his buddies.

It was hard not having him home that year, hard not knowing how he was or where he was. He was always in our prayers.

Maybe that’s where you are this year. There might be an ache in your heart because a dear loved one will be missing from your Christmas celebration. Do you know that our heavenly Father knows how that feels?

His Son came to earth for thirty-three years. They had never been apart before that. On the night before Jesus was crucified He was thinking of home.

“Do not let your heart be troubled. You have put your trust in God, put your trust in Me also. There are many rooms in My Father’s house. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going away to make a place for you. After I go and make a place for you, I will come back and take you with Me. Then you may be where I am.” John 14:1-3 NLV

Thinking of home but also making provision for all of us to join Him someday. Home for Christmas!

Our Father also has a heart for the wayward. He waits lovingly, patiently, for us to come home when we have strayed.

” While he was yet a long way off, his father saw him. The father was full of loving-pity for him. He ran and threw his arms around him and kissed him.,,Let us eat and be glad. 24 For my son was dead and now he is alive again. He was lost and now he is found. Let us eat and have a good time.’ Luke 15:20-24 NLV

No Christmas celebration is complete if someone is missing. Step into the Father’s open arms and come home for Christmas.

I Like Your House

I hope you all forgive me for not getting a blog posted this morning. It was a day that life got in the way!

Friday noon our three youngest grandchildren came for a visit. They are 7,5, and 3. Our afternoon was filled with coloring, games, swimming, dinner and smores. Housing three littles in an RV is a delightful challenge. We have a big bed that drops down from the ceiling in the toy-hauler garage that made the perfect bed for the three of them when they were smaller but in the last year, all three of them have really grown.

The drop-down bed was perfect size for the two girls, and we had a surprise for Sam, the 7-year-old. There’s a sleeping loft between the kitchen and the garage. Just the right size for one growing boy. We weren’t sure how well he would do with going up and down the ladder but after a few timid encounters, he finally climbed to the top, crawled in and announced, “I really like my new bed”. Wonderful!

More games, prayer time and then off to bed.

Saturday morning I was up by 4, followed shortly by Sam, who was peeking over the edge of the loft at 4:15. Kristine woke by 4:30. I told her she had to go back to sleep. She rolled over and did. Sam was given permission to come down but needed to lay on the couch so I could finish my writing. “You have to be quiet. You can’t wake the girls or Pappy”. He heeded my words.

Once the others were up, we all went outside in our jammies before it got too hot and put out fresh water for the birds, seed in the feeder, water the plants and made sidewalk chalk drawings. It warms up fast in the desert so we were back inside just before breakfast.

More games to play and drawings to make for their parents.

Before we knew it, their parents were here and we were grilling hamburgers. The perfect lunch and then off to the swimming pool again. The three-year-old had fallen asleep at lunch and so she and Pappy stayed at the RV to make homemade ice cream for when we returned.

While we were at the pool Kristine whispered to me, “I really like coming to your trailer, Besta”, followed by a tight squeeze.

“For a day in Your house is better than a thousand outside. I would rather be the one who opens the door of the house of my God, than to live in the tents of the sinful. 11 For the Lord God is a sun and a safe-covering. The Lord gives favor and honor. He holds back nothing good from those who walk in the way that is right.” Psalm 84:10-11 NLV

“Better is one day in Your house than a thousand elsewhere, oh yes Father, that’s how I feel about You.”

All too soon it was time for them to go home. As Sam was getting into the car he hugged me and this time he whispered in my ear, “Besta, when can we come back”? With a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye I said, “soon, very soon”.

There are many rooms in My Father’s house. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going away to make a place for you. After I go and make a place for you, I will come back and take you with Me. Then you may be where I am.” John 14:2-3 NLV

In case you’re asking, I want you to know that the Lord said He’s coming back, soon, very soon and we can go home with Him.

Almost Home

Oh, my goodness! Yesterday was a big day – and my body feels it this morning. Let me fill you in.

It has been a fun adventure figuring out where everything goes in the new RV, some of it has gone to donation centers. We are almost settled and yesterday was a big step in getting us there.

All of our married life we have had a king-sized bed. Dave is about 6’3″ and anything smaller just felt cramped. But having that wide of a mattress in the RV bedroom was a struggle for both of us. Yesterday we removed that mattress and replaced it with a queen-sized one. The bigger mattress and memory foam topper had to be hauled out, the bed platform cut down, sawdust vacuumed up, new mattress put in place and the bed made up. Whew!

Once the bedroom was done, we went to work on the garage area. There was an extra bed in there. We pulled that mattress out and turned the bunk into a storage area for fishing poles and other bulky items. I had purchased a rug for the garage floor but before we could put it down, we had to move or remove tubs and totes.

With the rug in place, it was time for a deep breath and a quick once over with the vacuum. Then we could sit down. It’s almost home – clutter removed, things in place and only a couple more items to move it. My body is sore but my heart is happy!

I’m excited for family and friends to come visit our new home; I want to welcome them!

All this got me to thinking about Jesus and heaven. Jesus said:

“There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I wouldn’t tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together.” John 14:2-3 CEV

Jesus is in heaven preparing a place for us – all of us! That’s a whole lot of rooms. I’m wondering, is He almost done? Are the rugs in place and the curtains on the windows? How much longer before He’s finished? I know He wants everything done perfectly because there is no imperfection in all of heaven.

We all probably have some of those we love occupying their place in heaven and I’m sure they would tell us how absolutely perfect it is. But there will be a time when the Father tells Jesus to return to this earth and bring all of His children back to heaven to live there for eternity.

36 No one knows the day or hour. The angels in heaven don’t know, and the Son himself doesn’t know. Only the Father knows…42 So be on your guard! You don’t know when your Lord will come. ” Matthew 24:36,42 CEV (read Matthew 24)

These are exciting times! I know my grandparents anticipated the return of Jesus in their lifetime, my parents did too. We are just that much closer than they were.

“But we are citizens of heaven and are eagerly waiting for our Savior to come from there.” Philippians 3:30 CEV

The final preparations are being made. We’re almost home!
