Can You Hear It?

Each morning as I sit in the quiet I hear it. Sometimes it’s as soft as a lullaby and at other times it comes booming through my soul with the passion of an aria.

What do I hear you ask? I hear my Father singing – yes, singing and He’s singing over me!

On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: “Do not be afraid, O Zion. Do not let your hands lose their strength. 17 The Lord your God is with you, a Powerful One Who wins the battle. He will have much joy over you. With His love He will give you new life. He will have joy over you with loud singing. 18 I will gather those who have sorrow for the special days, and take away their shame. 19 At that time I will punish all those who made it hard for you. I will save those who cannot walk and gather those who have been driven away. And I will turn their shame into praise. They will be known all over the earth.” Zephaniah 3:16-19 NLV

I can’t even begin to count the number of days that I share with you Scriptures where the Father instructs us not to be afraid, but here I am this morning with another one.

These verses are an encouragement to the nation of Israel but they are also offered to us. Don’t be afraid, don’t lose strength, I am with you. I take joy in you, I give you new life and I am singing over you with great joy…

Wow, what an amazing word picture. The Father is singing over us with great joy!

I remember the morning of my wedding. My brother was home to join the celebration. He was in our parents’ guest bathroom shaving and he was singing at Charlie Pride song, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning”. As I walked by, he leaned his head out the door and kissed me on the cheek.

It was one of the wonderful brother/sister moments. He was singing over me. So sweet.

That was a one-time event but the singing I hear in my heart that comes from my Father is almost a daily event. I sit quietly and I can hear His voice.

One hymn that I love to sing, and it always fills my eyes with tears, is “In the Garden”. The chorus goes like this:

“And He walks with me
And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known”

Whatever your day has in store, slow down and listen. Listen with your heart. You will hear the Father singing over you. It will be a song of love.

Enjoy His presence!

Technical Difficulties

Today is one of those days when things aren’t going according to normal…

What to do?

“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” James 1:2-5 NLT

Join me in considering each circumstance an opportunity of GREAT joy!

The Father is always in control!!

A Full Tank

When I was a teenager, my Dad always reminded me to make sure I had plenty of gas in my car. He would tell me to never let my tank get below 1/4. “You never know if the gauge is correct”, he would say.

It was an important lesson and one we tried to impart to our kids as they were becoming responsible drivers. But more importantly, it is necessary for us to keep our “joy full”. It makes such an impact on our daily lives.

Before our day gets started, have we filled our tank?

A joy-full day. Let’s get that joy tank filled first thing. I must admit I get distracted sometimes – I forget that I am in the Father’s presence and then I discover that attempting to do things in my own strength and power is tiring at best and always frustrating.

“ My friends, be glad, even if you have a lot of trouble. 3 You know that you learn to endure by having your faith tested. 4 But you must learn to endure everything, so that you will be completely mature and not lacking in anything.” James 1:2-4 CEV

In the King James version, this verse reads “Count it all joy”. Count it joy when we face temptations – really? Yes. The joy comes from knowing that we’re not in this alone!

God has promised to never leave us or forsake us. We are always in His presence and in His presence there is fullness of joy! Joy in knowing we are not alone, joy in knowing that we aren’t operating under our own power or our own wisdom, joy to know that He has created us to be victorious! And when we realize that it is a sign of growth and maturity. We are becoming more Christ-like .

“You will teach me the right way to live. Just being with you will bring complete happiness.
Being at your right side will make me happy forever.” Psalm 16:11 ERV

In John 16, Jesus was talking with his disciples the night before His crucifixion. He was giving them last minute instructions. He told them that they would all abandon Him and that He would be alone but He quickly added that the Father would be with Him so He wouldn’t really be alone. (In His presence is fullness of joy)!

He then told the disciples that they would have troubles in this world. Not as big as the crucifixion but troubles all the same. His next words may have seem strange to them, He said “Be of good cheer (find joy), for I have overcome the world”. Jesus had just told them how he was overcoming the trials in His life – He wasn’t looking for the support of friends and followers but He was simply looking to the One who would never leave or forsake, the Father and in the Father’s presence is victory and fullness of joy.

Be determined to have a joy-filled day. Keep your mind focused on the Father and in His presence you will find fullness of joy!

Keep your tank full.

Child’s Play

I’ve been telling you for weeks how much rain we’ve been getting here in the mountains. Everything is very green and lush. It’s beautiful and now we are starting to see ponds where there have been none, not for a very long time.

A few of those are appearing in the campground, in the campsites. The ground has become so saturated with the rainwater that it’s not soaking in as quickly as it used too. One such pond is at the entrance, across from our check-in station.

We camp hosts were joking that the pond was big enough to stock with fish – or at least crawdads and tadpoles. So…Friday, when Dave and I went to town I bought 3 rubber ducks and 5 bathtub fish. When we came home, I put them in the pond. Saturday morning two of my favorite little campers came down to say good morning and spotted our newest “floating” camper residents. Since they were in their rain boots their mom and dad let them play and splash in the puddle.

New idea!

I drove to the marina and bought a small fishing pole, affixed a magnet to the end of the line, and secured something metallic to the back of each fish and duck. Now, we had a fishing hole for the littles. That evening my two friends came back on their evening walk, with their parents and grandparents, and they got to be the first to catch a big one.

They were so patient.

Believe it or not, it took some skill to get one of those rubber toys to the bank. They were so happy, and content. For about the next 20-30 minutes they took turns fishing and landing their catch.

Now you fisherman know that patience is as much an essential requirement as a good pole and the proper bait.

The same holds true spiritually.

“As Jesus walked alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, because they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 20 Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 21 Continuing on, he saw another set of brothers, James the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with Zebedee their father repairing their nets. Jesus called them and 22 immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

23 Jesus traveled throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues. He announced the good news of the kingdom and healed every disease and sickness among the people.” Matthew 4:18-23 CEB

Jesus was patient and loving as He ministered to people. He didn’t demand to be followed, He invited people to join him. He built relationship by attending to their needs; He healed those who were sick and brought them good news! He showed them compassion and understanding.

We have also been called to be fishers of men. We do that by building relationship, showing love, being genuine. We shouldn’t get discouraged or give up.

There’s much to be learn from what some would call child’s play. The message of Jesus is good news and we should share it with joyful hearts and patience.

Camping Fun

You’ve probably wondered where I have been the last couple of days. I, and I don’t know how many thousands of others, have been without the service of our Verizon carrier. From what we’ve been told, a guilty party or parties vandalized the fiber optic lines and we were without service from 3:30 pm on Saturday until almost 3:30 pm on Monday.

But, I’m back!

In my last blog, I shared with you about keeping clean spiritually.

Saturday morning our youngest daughter, her husband, youngest grandchild and I went for a long walk through the campground. Dave was tasked with watching our almost 5 year-old granddaughter and her almost 7 year-old brother. When we returned from our walk and entered our campsite this is what we saw.

Two youngsters playing in the dirt – covered from head to toe in black mountain dust. I had to stop and literally laugh out loud! It was a site of pure fun for the kids and that’s what camping is all about.

Making memories. Our oldest daughter and her husband had been with Dave, watching them as they played and her comment was “what happens in the campsite, stays in the campsite”.

I think I heard God laughing too.

“And this is not all that is meaningless in our world. In this life, good people are often treated as though they were wicked, and wicked people are often treated as though they were good. This is so meaningless!

15 So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 8:14-15 NLT

Moments of real joy should fill our lives, after all, our lives in heaven will be filled with singing and there will be no sorrow or tears.

“I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” Revelation 21:3-4 NLT

Maybe we should all be a little more innocent and childlike in looking for joyful moments, especially when we must face unexpected frustrations and set backs.

“The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” Psalm 28:7 NLT

Our Father takes pleasure in bringing us joy. He wants us to experience hearts filled with joy!

I Love My Job

Campers have started arriving and I truly enjoy hearing the voices of small children giggling throughout the campground.

Moms and Dads are bringing their kids to the same place they came as children with their parents. Fisherman are leaving the campground at “0-dark30” to find that special place on the shoreline or to be the first to launch their boats. Each one in pursuit of that record rainbow or cutthroat trout.

Folks are walking their dogs and exploring nature. There are so many sites to see!

Dave and I pray for each of them – we pray for safety and protection, for enjoyment and relaxation. This year we are facing another Summer where Winter snowpack and Spring rains were sparse, so we are praying against fires and for good rains to moisten the ground and add water to the lakes.

This morning I found these verses in my Bible reading. I know I’ve read them before but this morning they stood out and made an impact.

We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them.  Even Christ did not try to please himself. But as the Scriptures say, “The people who insulted you also insulted me.”  And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:2-6 CEV

Patient, cheerful, doing good – that shall be my motto for the summer. In all I do, I want to follow Christ and give God praise.

The Lord has us all in different places, touching different lives. Let’s look for opportunities to be an example of His love in all we do!

Singing Before Dawn

This morning I slept a little longer than normal. How did I know? I was awaken by the birds singing in the pines just before dawn.

Normally I’m up and have had my first cup of coffee before they start their chorus. It’s a glorious way to start the day.

Listen…Stop right now and listen for 10 seconds…If you’re anything like me you’re morning starts with the sound of the coffee pot and the hum of the computer. But it hasn’t always been that way.

I remember what it’s like to wake to the alarm clock. Have kids that need to get up, be fed and taken to school on my way to the office in the busy traffic. Radio’s playing, tv spilling the morning news, emails to read, FB to check in on – so much noise.

When you stopped to listen did you hear the voice of God?

I love that when I wake up each morning I say “I love you Father, I love you Jesus, I love you Holy Spirit” and then I can hear that inner voice say “We love you too”. WOW!!

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

Folks spend much of their time looking for the big, the spectacular, the miraculous and miss the simple, still small voice of God trying to lead them and give them insight.

How many times have you heard someone say, “I knew I shouldn’t have done that” or “It just dawned on me” or “I was just thinking about that very thing”? We often don’t realize that God is trying to get through to us.

Elijah was looking for God’s answers during a very serious time in his life. He was seeking God and there came a great wind and then an earthquake and then a fire and finally a still small voice. God spoke in a still small voice!

“And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” I Kings 19:11-12

The song of the birds is my morning reminder, the still small voice, as it were that God has the day in order. The birds wake singing praise to God for His provision.

I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? 26 Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth much more than birds?” Matthew 6:25-26 CEV

The most important thing you’ll hear each morning, if you listen, will be the still small voice of the Lord. Sssssh – just listen!

Our Summer Home

We’re here!! Not completely set up yet, we’ll finish that today but we made it safely to the mountain yesterday. It’s good to be home!

I had so many things to be thankful yesterday. Not the least of which is my husband’s good driving. He is a PRO. I have no idea how many thousands of miles we have traveled in the last forty-nine years but with his skill and the Lord’s provision we have been almost 100% accident free.

It was so good to see the lake that holds so many memories of family. And then there were visits from friends within a few hours of arriving. It’s going to be a wonderful summer.

“Always be full of joy. Never stop praying. Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18 ERV

I will be praying that all your summer plans with be filled with joy and with wonderment.

One thing that we didn’t get done was setting up our cell booster, so we are operating with a very weak signal. I am praying this blog makes it out this morning.

“‘May the Lord bless you
    and keep you.
25 May the Lord smile down on you
    and show you his kindness.
26 May the Lord answer your prayers
and give you peace.’” Numbers 6:24-26 ERV

You are in my thoughts, my prayers and a love for you fills my heart!

No Time Like the Present

What time is it where you are?

One thing I know is we are all in the “present”. Since we are connected through the internet it may be early morning – midday or perhaps you are reading this in the evening but whatever time it is where you are, you are in the present.

You could be in a time of trouble, a time of fear, good time, dinner time, party time, time of loneliness, time of sickness or time of concern. No matter, it is time to praise the Lord!

Why? Because He is Lord of all and Lord over all. All who trust in Him will never be ashamed!

Just so you know, all those times listed above – I’ve been there and the thing that ALWAYS brings me through is praise time! Remembering that my heavenly Father is bigger than anything here and that He has a plan for me to prosper and have good success gives me reason to praise.

“I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace. 2 I will boast of all his kindness to me. Let all who are discouraged take heart. 3 Let us praise the Lord together and exalt his name.4 For I cried to him and he answered me! He freed me from all my fears. 5 Others too were radiant at what he did for them. Theirs was no downcast look of rejection! 6 This poor man cried to the Lord—and the Lord heard him and saved him out of his troubles. 7 For the Angel of the Lord guards and rescues all who reverence him.8 Oh, put God to the test and see how kind he is! See for yourself the way his mercies shower down on all who trust in him. 9 If you belong to the Lord, reverence him; for everyone who does this has everything he needs. 10 Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those of us who reverence the Lord will never lack any good thing.11 Sons and daughters, come and listen and let me teach you the importance of trusting and fearing the Lord.” Psalm 34:1-11 TLB

Look at the clock, see the time. Mark it down. Now is the time to look up and be glad!

Loving Service

These two words were on my heart when I woke up this morning, loving service. What a wonderful combination.

I think each of us can relate a story of being served by a grumpy or unenthusiastic waiter or waitress in a restaurant. Their attitude was curt, sharp-tongued and even down-right rude. Even though the food may have been good we probably walked away not desiring to return anytime soon.

Now compare that with a kind and attentive server. One who anticipated your needs and greeted you with a smile and pleasant demeanor. They made your mealtime more enjoyable because they genuinely cared.

Our attitude makes a difference. We choose joy or grumbling, peace or turmoil.

Our daily chores – washing dishes, doing laundry, fixing meals, buying groceries, cleaning house – can be acts of love or drudgery. We can be grateful for opportunity to provide for those we love, or we may be tempted to feel taken for granted and unappreciated. I strongly advise against the second.

Whoever wants to be first must serve the rest of you like a slave. 45 Follow my example: Even the Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people.” Mark 10:44-45 ERV

Jesus is our perfect example. He could have expected to be waited on hand and foot, after all he was God’s son. But He laid all that aside and came to lovingly serve those He encountered. Each act of kindness pointed to the compassion of His Father.

Embrace each task with an attitude of loving service.
