Just A Little Talk

One of my favorite memories of Sunday night church services was the men’s quartet who would sing in wonderful four-part harmony. The songs were so upbeat. One of my favorite songs was “Just A Little Talk With Jesus”.

“I once was lost in sin but Jesus took me in
And then a little light from Heaven filled my soul
He bathed my heart in love and wrote my name above
And just a little talk with Jesus made me whole

Now let us have a little talk with Jesus
Let us tell Him all about our troubles
He will hear our faintest cry and He will answer by and by
Now when you feel a little prayer wheel turning
You’ll know a little fire is burning
You will find a little talk with Jesus makes it right”

Just a little talk with Jesus makes it right – all right!

You know it does.

Believe it or not, we’re still with Jesus and his teaching on the mountain. You know the teaching that started with the be-attitudes. The one that told us to love as God, Himself, loves. The teaching that instructed us not to be show-offs, now gives us instruction on prayer.

“When you pray, don’t talk on and on as people do who don’t know God. They think God likes to hear long prayers. 8 Don’t be like them. Your Father knows what you need even before you ask.

9 You should pray like this:

Our Father in heaven,
help us to honor
    your name.
10 Come and set up
    your kingdom,
so that everyone on earth
    will obey you,
as you are obeyed
    in heaven.
11 Give us our food for today.
12 Forgive us for doing wrong,
    as we forgive others.
13 Keep us from being tempted
    and protect us from evil. The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours forever. Amen.

14  If you forgive others for the wrongs they do to you, your Father in heaven will forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:7-15 CEV

I love that Jesus starts with our Father. He was a man of prayer. Often, He would stay up late or rise early to go to a quiet place just to talk to His Father. He knew His Father had the answers and the strength that He needed to live life as a human.

This prayer is short, sweet and to the point. The one praying it doesn’t need to be a seminary graduate, an ordained minister or priest. Prayer is a child talking to their parent, telling Him all their troubles and having confidence that “Dad” has heard and is there to help.

“ We have a great high priest, who has gone into heaven, and he is Jesus the Son of God. This is why we must hold on to what we have said about him. 15 Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! 16 So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.” Hebrews 4:14-16 CEV

Prayer doesn’t need a lot of thee’s and thou’s; it’s us talking to our Father. Just conversation.

Just a little talk, leaving our burdens and cares with Him, makes things right, all right!

No Showoffs Please

First of all, this morning I would like to thank you for following the link and going directly to the website to read yesterday’s blog. I’m not sure if I will be able to post to Facebook again this morning but I’m hopeful.

It somehow seemed appropriate that a morning teaching on not being irritated or short-tempered would be removed for whatever reason. It certainly gave me the opportunity to practice what I preach – I was able to stay calm, it didn’t spoil my morning.

Now, on to more of Jesus’ teachings from the mountain. He had just told us to love like His Father, our Father, in every situation.

“When you do good deeds, don’t try to show off. If you do, you won’t get a reward from your Father in heaven.

2 When you give to the poor, don’t blow a loud horn. That’s what show-offs do in the synagogues and on the street corners, because they are always looking for praise. I can assure you that they already have their reward. 3 When you give to the poor, don’t let anyone know about it. 4 Then your gift will be given in secret. Your Father knows what is done in secret and will reward you.

5  When you pray, don’t be like those show-offs who love to stand up and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. They do this just to look good. I can assure you that they already have their reward. 6 When you pray, go into a room alone and close the door. Pray to your Father in private. He knows what is done in private and will reward you.” Matthew 6:1-6 CEV

There was a problem in the Jewish synagogues with the religious leaders trying to call attention to themselves. They wanted everyone to see how long they prayed and how much money they gave. They sought to be the center of attention. They weren’t there to worship God but to draw attention to themselves.

We are often guilty of the same thing – telling people about the “good” we do to help others. Bringing attention to ourselves.

“As Jesus was teaching, he said: Guard against the teachers of the Law of Moses! They love to walk around in long robes and be greeted in the market. 39 They like the front seats in the synagogues and the best seats at banquets. 40 But they cheat widows out of their homes and pray long prayers just to show off. They will be punished most of all…42 Finally, a poor widow came up and put in two coins worth only a few pennies. 43 Jesus told his disciples to gather around him. Then he said: I tell you that this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 44 Everyone else gave what they didn’t need. But she is very poor and gave everything she had. Now she doesn’t have a cent to live on.” Mark 12:39-44 CEV

Jesus was not impressed with their piety; in fact, he faulted them for their hypocrisy. They had their reward.

God doesn’t need show-offs; His desire is that we show out His love and compassion.

Irritated & Short-Tempered

Now, I know that doesn’t describe me or any of you reading this but, on the off chance that it should describe someone you live with or work with, I feel we all need this instruction that Jesus gave.

I’ll let you eaves drop on my conversation with the Lord.

“ You have heard people say, ‘Love your neighbors and hate your enemies.’ 44 But I tell you to love your enemies and pray for anyone who mistreats you. 45  Then you will be acting like your Father in heaven. He makes the sun rise on both good and bad people. And he sends rain for the ones who do right and for the ones who do wrong. 46 If you love only those people who love you, will God reward you for this? Even tax collectors love their friends. 47 If you greet only your friends, what’s so great about this? Don’t even unbelievers do that? 48  But you must always act like your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:43-48 CEV

What?

I must ALWAYS act like my Father in heaven?? Lord, you’ve got to be kidding. Do you see who/what I have to put up with? Surely, you don’t mean that I must be loving and patient with them.

What?

Oh, you mean them too? The ones who are so contrary and aggravating? Ok, I hear You – I’m supposed to be like my heavenly Father in every situation; that’s a big ask Lord. Oh, You weren’t asking; You were telling me that’s what I MUST do.

Well then, if that’s the case, I need Your strength and Your restraint. I need to see others as You do and treat them with the same patience and compassion that You show to me.

What was that Lord?

And not just my friends but my enemies as well. Ah, come on Lord, that’s more than I think I can handle.

“Jesus answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. 38 This is the first and most important commandment. 39  The second most important commandment is like this one. And it is, ‘Love others as much as you love yourself.’ 40 All the Law of Moses and the Books of the Prophets are based on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 CEV

Wow, Lord. That’s big.

“ Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don’t yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude. 32  Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ.” Ephesians 4:31-32 CEV

Well, if that’s Your will for me then I know that You will give me the desire and the strength to do it. You were my example when You prayed: “not my will, but thine be done”. Thanks for loving me enough to die for me when I was at my worst. Now, I choose to live for You.

Someone’s Missing

This morning I’ve been sitting here thanking the Father for His faithfulness. He has promised to never leave us or abandon us. Never, no, never.

“Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]” Hebrews 13:5 AMPC

This verse is from the Amplified Bible. I love studying from the Amplified text. It expands the text more than English and gives us the intensity of the Greek language.

I will not, I will not, I will not, I will not let you down or leave you helpless. God is definitely making a point. He WON’T abandon us!

Tie that in with the first part of that verse. We are told to avoid greed and the lust for money. We have no need to be servant to lack of moral character because…I will not, I will not, I will not let you down.

That promise of God goes further than our financial dealings. It is our assurance that we are His and as His children He is always looking out for our best.

The story of the prodigal son came to mind. The son had a free will; he wasn’t enslaved and so he made the choice to leave. The son had wanted a different life; one filled with all the things that riches could buy. But, He was never out of his father’s thoughts.

I began to see the story from the Father’s point of view. Each morning and evening there would be an empty place at the table. Each day he would watch the road, searching for his wayward son.

One day, walking up that dusty road the Father saw his son returning. The Father didn’t make him grovel; he didn’t even make him walk the long lane to home by himself. He ran to greet him. He embraced him, kissing him, welcoming him home again.

“So he got up and came to his [own] father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity and tenderness [for him]; and he ran and embraced him and kissed him [fervently].” Luke 15:20 AMPC

His son was no longer missing. That night there was a feast fit for a much-loved son. No longer was there an empty plate at the table. The prodigal had returned.

I think at one time or another each of us live the life of the prodigal, wanting to live life on our own terms, driven by selfish ambition, thinking we know best.

God lets us go but He never abandons us. He’s always watching, always waiting, always ready to welcome us home.

“Get the best calf and prepare it, so we can eat and celebrate. 24 This son of mine was dead, but has now come back to life. He was lost and has now been found.” And they began to celebrate.” Luke 15:23-24 CEV

When we return our place at the table is no longer empty. The Father says it’s time for a party. It’s good to be home!

Changing Times

Last week I ordered some new calendar pages for my Day-Timer. Do you remember the helpful, organizational calendars called Day-Timer?

I like to see things written down in front of me. Not in my phone or on my laptop, I need something I can flip open and see the month, change things as needed, move them to another day if necessary. Yes, I guess I’m old fashioned.

Well, the pages came, and I spent a good portion of yesterday morning adding birthdays, anniversaries, doctor appointments, etc. Today I’ll enter work dates and activities. As I flipped the pages it made me realize how quickly time is passing.

Even my morning routine is changing. Dave and I have been walking in the cool mornings. However, for the last several mornings we’ve had to wait a bit: it’s been too dark. I lament because walking at 6 a.m. still gives me time to get home, eat a bite, shower and be to work on time.

Yes, time is changing.

It’s changing spiritually too.

“You can be certain that in the last days there will be some very hard times. 2 People will love only themselves and money. They will be proud, stuck-up, rude, and disobedient to their parents. They will also be ungrateful, godless, 3 heartless, and hateful. Their words will be cruel, and they will have no self-control or pity. These people will hate everything good. 4 They will be sneaky, reckless, and puffed up with pride. Instead of loving God, they will love pleasure. 5 Even though they will make a show of being religious, their religion won’t be real. Don’t have anything to do with such people.” II Timothy 3:1-5 CEV

Those of us who know Christ sense that His return is near.

“This same Jesus Who was taken from you into heaven will return in the same way you saw Him go up into heaven.” Acts 1:11b NLV

He promised when He left earth that he would come back again and take those of us who are alive to heaven with Him. That day is coming. When? We don’t know for certain, but we are told to watch the signs.

“When you hear about wars and riots, don’t be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but this isn’t the end. 10 Nations will go to war against one another, and kingdoms will attack each other. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in many places people will starve to death and suffer terrible diseases. All sorts of frightening things will be seen in the sky.” Luke 21:9-11 CEV

Those are Jesus’ words. The message is not one of fear but one of hope.

” When these things begin to happen, stand up tall and don’t be afraid. Know that it is almost time for God to free you!” Luke 21:28 ERV

“Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Don’t be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me. 2 … I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. 3 After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together.” John 14:1-3 CEV

There isn’t a date we can put on the calendar.

“ But no one knows the day or the hour. No! Not even the angels in heaven know. The Son does not know. Only the Father knows.” Matthew 24:36 NLV

The heart of every Christian should be excited. The times they are a changing and the Lord is coming soon!!

Do You Hear It?

How many of you have seen the movie “Ever After: A Cinderella Story”? It’s been nearly 30 years since it was released but it’s a movie I enjoy watching over again.

A Cinderella story. Reminds me of my life with Christ. Let me explain.

I grew up thinking I had to work hard enough, be good enough, and then, possibly, God would really love me. My relationship with the Lord was based on me and what I was doing – right or wrong – and not on God’s grace.

When the Lord opened my eyes to His grace and I found my righteousness in Him, it was like I have been fitted with the glass slipper. My value, my worth, was not in my efforts but in who He created me to be.

In this movie, Cinderella is abducted and is taken to the castle of an evil lord. Prince Charming comes to rescue her – I know it cheesy right?

But let me ask you, how many times have you found yourself in a situation where you felt imprisoned by circumstances out of your control? That’s when we truly come to recognize God’s grace and mercy.

His promise to never abandon us becomes as real as our next breath.

In the movie, as the Prince arrives to rescue her, for the first time he calls her by her real name. She says “…Say the part where you call me by name again.” And then he says her name, Danielle, and declares his love. AWWWW!

Even now, that phrase touches me. You see, I remember the first time I really heard the Lord call me by name. In my heart, I heard Him say “Kristi”. His voice was soft and low, kind and filled with love.

“Do not be afraid. For I have bought you and made you free. I have called you by name. You are Mine! 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the rivers, they will not flow over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The fire will not destroy you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, Who saves you.” Isaiah 43:1-3 NLT

Can you imagine? The voice of God calling your name, what a joy!

Then I remembered that God called others by name as well it started with Adam & Eve; Noah, David, Daniel, Jeremiah, Zacchaeus, the disciples, Mary at the garden tomb, Saul on the road to Damascus and John on the Isle of Patmos; all of these and more had that same wonderful experience of hearing God call them by name.

God the Father has called us by name as well. Yes, He has! In His love He called our name telling us that He has a plan for our lives; a plan to be in fellowship and relationship with Him; a plan of adoption so that we can call Him “Abba Father.”

Hearing God speak our name isn’t a one-time experience, limited only to the day we accepted Him as Savior. How sad it would be if that were true.

Daily God is calling our name and telling us He loves us. Do we hear it or are we too busy and distracted? Take time to listen…and take time to respond.

Can you imagine how it thrills His heart to hear us say, “Abba Father, I love you. I want to spend time with you today.”?

Be – Attitudes

Did you ever notice that one of the biggest adversaries we face is our own attitude?

We start out planning to have a good day and then life happens. We spill coffee on our new blouse; the dog knocks over our favorite plant, we get stuck in traffic, and the news, oh the news.

Things can spiral out of control quickly and it’s all being ruled by our attitudes.

Shortly after Jesus met up with Peter, James, John and Andrew on the seashore and they left their nets, He began His life of ministry. People were touched and miracles happened.

“Jesus went all over Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news about God’s kingdom. He also healed every kind of disease and sickness... 24Some of them had a lot of demons in them, others were thought to be crazy, and still others could not walk. But Jesus healed them all. 25 Large crowds followed Jesus from Galilee and the region around the ten cities known as Decapolis…” Matthew 4:23-25 CEV

People came by droves to see the miracle worker.

“5 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the side of a mountain and sat down. Jesus’ disciples gathered around him, 2 and he taught them:

3 God blesses those people who depend only on him. They belong to the kingdom of heaven!
4 God blesses those people who grieve. They will find comfort!
5 God blesses those people who are humble. The earth will belong to them!
6 God blesses those people who want to obey him more than to eat or drink. They will be given what they want!
7 God blesses those people who are merciful. They will be treated with mercy!
8 God blesses those people whose hearts are pure. They will see him!
9 God blesses those people who make peace. They will be called his children!
10 God blesses those people who are treated badly for doing right. They belong to the kingdom of heaven.

11  God will bless you when people insult you, mistreat you, and tell all kinds of evil lies about you because of me. 12  Be happy and excited! You will have a great reward in heaven. People did these same things to the prophets who lived long ago.” Matthew 5:1-11 CEV

This is the beginning of a message that continues for three chapters.

Jesus takes the time to meet people where they live. And the first thing He dealt with was the attitude of the heart. People in the crowd came because they were seeking answers to life’s problems; they were grieving, insulted, mistreated, dependent, hungry for a change, looking for peace.

His message to us is the same. There is not one thing that happens in our lives that He doesn’t see or know about.

“Only people who don’t know God are always worrying about such things. Your Father in heaven knows you need all of these. 33 But more than anything else, put God’s work first and do what he wants. Then the other things will be yours as well.” Matthew 6:32-33 CEV

This is all part of the message that Jesus delivered that day.

Don’t worry – God knows our needs. He wants to provide for us; He wants our attitude, our heart’s focus, to be one of trust in Him and His love. Then everything else will fall in line.

Be conscious of God’s mercy, peace, provision, loving care and then our be-attitudes will be right.

Something for Everyone

Occasionally the Lord shows me some verses that need no commentary from me. His word is always sufficient. I’m just the messenger.

Enjoy this message – it’s for everyone!

“The Lord Works Miracles

1 Sing a new song to the Lord!
    He has worked miracles,
and with his own powerful arm,
    he has won the victory.
2 The Lord has shown the nations
that he has the power to save
    and to bring justice.
3 God has been faithful
    in his love for Israel,
and his saving power is seen
    everywhere on earth.

4 Tell everyone on this earth
to sing happy songs
    in praise of the Lord.
5 Make music for him on harps.
    Play beautiful melodies!
6 Sound the trumpets and horns
and celebrate with joyful songs
    for our Lord and King!

7 Command the ocean to roar
    with all its creatures,
and the earth to shout
    with all its people.
8 Order the rivers
    to clap their hands,
and all the hills
    to sing together.
9 Let them worship the Lord!
He is coming to judge
    everyone on the earth,
and he will be honest

“Our Lord, you keep your word
    and do everything you say.
14 When someone stumbles or falls,
    you give a helping hand.
15 Everyone depends on you,
and when the time is right,
    you provide them with food.
16 By your own hand you satisfy
    the desires of all who live.

17 Our Lord, everything you do
    is kind and thoughtful,
18 and you are near to everyone
    whose prayers are sincere.
19 You satisfy the desires
    of all your worshipers,
and you come to save them
    when they ask for help.
20 You take care of everyone
who loves you,
    but you destroy the wicked.

21 I will praise you, Lord,
and everyone will respect
    your holy name forever.” Psalm 145:13-21 CEV

We are the everyones’ who should be singing praises to God. We are the everyones’ who love and respect the Lord. We are the everyones’ that He cares for, provides for and lifts up when we have fallen.

That is God’s promise and He doesn’t lie.

“God is no mere human! He doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.” Numbers 23:19 CEV

“The Lord isn’t slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost.” II Peter 3:9 CEV

We are ALL an everyone. This is the good news of God’s love and patience to us all!

Mending Nets

The other morning, I said if you woke up, which you did, then the Lord had something planned for you to do. I believe that with all my heart. Every day is an opportunity to do what God has designed us to do.

“ One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 19 Jesus called out to them, ‘Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!’ 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.

21 A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets. And he called them to come, too. 22 They immediately followed him, leaving the boat and their father behind.” Matthew 4:18-22 NLT

Net mending is a common activity for a fisherman, even more so in that day when nets were hemp and not nylon like we have today.

A year ago, we were in Greece, in a small port town of Naoussa on the island of Paros. Each day as we walked the path by the harbor, we saw the fisherman mending their nets. They had been out fishing all night and when they came in the routine was the same. Process their catch, clean the boat and mend the nets.

That’s where Jesus found His first four disciples, Peter, Andrew, James and John. It was a normal day of routine activity. Nothing special or different about the day until Jesus walked by.

He hanged the course of their lives. He called them to follow Him and without hesitation the Bible says immediately they left their nets. No discussion just immediate obedience. This decision to leave their nets and follow Jesus had consequences. If they decided later to turn back and return to fishing instead of following on with Jesus their nets would be in disrepair and ineffective until they were mended properly. Their livelihood would be in jeopardy.

Their immediate response indicates that they had no intention of returning to their nets. They followed!

They trusted the Master. They had faith in His calling and they followed.

How does that apply to us? Jesus said:

“ But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NLT

We’ve been instructed to be a witness wherever we go. On the job, at home, in the grocery store, on vacation, at the auto shop, on the sports field – wherever we go, we are witnesses.

When we hear the prompting of the Lord to call someone or go visit them to pray with them during a hard time, we are going into all the world. When we sense that we should help someone or give them an encouraging word we are leaving our nets and following. These are all opportunities of ministry. When we share Christ with someone who is hurting and overcome by grief, we are leaving our nets and following.

May we always be mindful that people need to experience the love of Jesus in a real and powerful way, and they are more important than our nets.

Not Easily Broken

Those are the words I was given for today. However, the context they were applied to is a new concept for me.

“A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:12 NLT

Most of the time this verse is taught on the message conveyed is one of friendship or marriage. Friend helping friend or husband, wife, and God forming a three-fold cord. I agree with both those teachings.

But this morning my thoughts went to I Corinthians 13.

” Love will never end. But all those gifts will come to an end—even the gift of prophecy, the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages, and the gift of knowledge. 9 These will all end because this knowledge and these prophecies we have are not complete. 10 But when perfection comes, the things that are not complete will end.

11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, and I made plans like a child. When I became a man, I stopped those childish ways. 12 It is the same with us. Now we see God as if we are looking at a reflection in a mirror. But then, in the future, we will see him right before our eyes. Now I know only a part, but at that time I will know fully, as God has known me. 13 So these three things continue: faith, hope, and love. And the greatest of these is love.” I Corinthians 13:8-13 ERV

The spiritual gifts we have been given will come to end one day. Their purpose will be complete. When we stand face to face with the Father there will no longer be any need for them because we will be complete in His presence.

Until then we need to continue to experience and share the gifts He has given us. These gifts aid us as we grow in our walk with Him from childhood to maturity. The more we learn of God the clearer we see Him and His wonderful love for us.

Three things should continually guide us in our walk; faith, hope and love.

In Christ we have hope, hope for a future and hope makes not ashamed. Then our faith gives life to what we hope for; faith gives hope substance. But without love faith doesn’t work.

“Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1 NLT

“ And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Hebrews 11:6 NLT

“Hope never makes us ashamed because the love of God has come into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who was given to us.” Romans 5:5 NLV

” I say this because our hope of being right with God comes through faith. And the Spirit helps us feel sure as we wait for that hope. 6 When someone belongs to Christ Jesus, it is not important if they are circumcised or not. The important thing is faith—the kind of faith that works through love.” Galatians 5:5-6 ERV

Father, I desire to see your love working in me today as I grow in you and to see your love working through me today so that others may see you more clearly. In Jesus name.

The strength we have for today can be found in the three-fold cord of faith, hope and love. The greatest of these is love!
