The Beginning, Middle & End

Our lives are like a book. Different chapters, different characters, different locations, but God has a definite story to fill each page. Here we are starting a new month and it won’t be long until we welcome a new year.

So, let’s start at the beginning.

“In the beginning God…” Genesis 1:1a

In the beginning of creation – In the beginning of my life – In the beginning of my current situation – In the beginning GOD!

God was there at the very beginning and He’s still here halfway through and He will be there at the end! He has chosen to invest Himself in my life, in my world, in my total existence. As the King David said in the Psalms, “Selah”. Stop and think, meditate, ponder deeply these words.

He hasn’t pulled back yet and He won’t. He will continue to be involved in all He has created for all eternity – He is the eternal, the everlasting God and Father. And He’s here for us because He loves us!

“A thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But I came to give life—life that is full and good.” John 10:10 ERV

Jesus spoke these words. He had referred to Himself as the Good Shepherd who leads us, His sheep. He leads us to green pastures; He protects us from our enemies; He gave His life to save ours.

I grew up singing this hymn, He Lives, and the older I get the more I realize the message in the words.

“I serve a risen Saviour, He’s in the world today;
I know that He is living, whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him, He’s always near.

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian, lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs to Jesus Christ the King!
The Hope of all who seek Him, the Help of all who find,
None other is so loving, so good and kind.

He lives, he lives Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart!”

Amen! He lives and, in His living, He provides for all that we need.

“Jesus is the one who says that all of this is true. Now he says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’ Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all people.” Revelation 22:20-21 ERV

It should give us great joy to know that He is coming soon.

Yes, with all the uncertainty in the world one thing is certain, He is coming soon. And He was and is and will continue to be kind to all. That’s the reason He came, out of love, He became our substitute, the sacrifice for our sins so that we can be reconciled to the Father. Forgiveness is ours; new life is ours; restoration is ours – we simply need to receive it as the free gift that it is.

When we focus on our beginning, we’ll find God and as we look to the end, we will see that He’s coming. And in the middle, He is reaching out to us in kindness, wanting to be involved in our daily lives in a powerful way.

Beginning, middle and end, Lord, we place it all in your hands.

Loving Kindness

There is a word in Hebrew, Chesed, that is used to describe God’s love toward us. “The Hebrew word chesed (also spelled hesedis so packed with meaning that no single word in the English language comes close to defining it. Used 248 times in scripture, this little-known descriptor carries volumes of information about God’s character while providing a glimpse of His redemptive plan through His very nature…Because of His chesed, God promised Israel that He would never leave nor forsake them. God kept His covenant with Israel, but not because they possessed any inherent righteousness. Nor did God hold firm to His promise because Israel consistently kept the law’s commands. The promise’s holding power was based on one thing: who God is. ” taken from Christianity.com, May 2022.

I wanted you to have this background before you read today’s verses. The Apostle Paul tells us that when we accept Christ we become Abraham’s seed, or heirs to the covenant. The chesed or loving-kindness of God is directed toward us when we are in Christ.

It’s so strong on my heart this morning that there are some who are emotionally at a breaking point. You feel that God doesn’t love you, He can’t love you, because of things you’ve done. That’s a lie from the devil! Our heavenly Father is reaching out to you with open arms. This is who God is.

“Hear, O Lord, and answer me. For I am suffering and in need. Keep my life, for I am faithful to You. You are my God. Save Your servant who trusts in You. Show me loving-kindness, O Lord. For I cry to You all day long. Bring joy to Your servant. For I lift up my soul to You, O Lord. For You are good and ready to forgive, O Lord. You are rich in loving-kindness to all who call to You. Hear my prayer, O Lord. Listen to my cry for help. I will call to You in the day of my trouble. For You will answer me. There is no one like You among the gods, O Lord. And there are no works like Yours. All the nations You have made will come and worship before You, O Lord. And they will bring honor to Your name. 10 For You are great and do great things. You alone are God.

11 Teach me Your way, O Lord. I will walk in Your truth. May my heart fear Your name. 12 O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You with all my heart. I will bring honor to Your name forever. 13 For Your loving-kindness toward me is great. And You have saved my soul from the bottom of the grave.

14 O God, proud men have come up against me. A group of fighting men want to take my life. And they do not think of You. 15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of love and pity. You are slow to anger and rich in loving-kindness and truth. 16 Turn to me, and show me loving-kindness. Give Your strength to Your servant. And save the son of your woman servant. 17 Give me something special to see of Your favor. Then those who hate me may see it and be ashamed. Because You, O Lord, have helped me and comforted me.” Psalm 86 NLV

Father, show everyone reading this the depth of Your loving-kindness. Strengthen and comfort them in Jesus name. Amen.

Growing Strong

As I was reading in Psalms this morning, I came across some verses I needed to think on for a while. In light of yesterday’s blog, these verses took on a deeper meaning.

Psalm 85 is captioned “A Prayer for Peace” in the CEV translation. That title intrigued me, and what I read in the last few verses really ministered to me.

“I will listen to you, Lord God, because you promise peace to those who are faithful and no longer foolish. You are ready to rescue everyone who worships you, so that you will live with us in all your glory. 10 Love and loyalty will come together; goodness and peace will unite. 11 Loyalty will sprout from the ground; justice will look down from the sky above. 12 Our Lord, you will bless us; our land will produce wonderful crops. 13 Justice will march in front, making a path for you to follow.” Psalm 85:8-13 CEV

“I will listen to what God the Lord will say. For He will speak peace to His people, to those who are right with Him. But do not let them turn again to foolish things. For sure His saving power is near those who fear Him, so His shining-greatness may live in the land. 10 Loving-kindness and truth have met together. Peace and what is right and good have kissed each other. 11 Truth comes up from the earth. And what is right and good looks down from heaven. 12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good. And our land will give its fruit. 13 What is right and good will go before Him and make a way for His steps.” Psalm 85:8-13 NLV

Seed sprouting in the ground, producing a crop. It’s what we were talking about yesterday. The ground..the seed..the crop.

When we listen to God’s word, what He says, we are receiving seed. Seed that will sprout up from the ground. When the ground is good the harvest will be fruitful. I know that this is referring to the land of Israel having bountiful crops but I believe it is more than that, it’s a changed heart.

Peace, truth, love, goodness. This is the same fruit that Paul tells us will grow in our lives when we have the Holy Spirit controlling us.

“But the fruit that comes from having the Holy Spirit in our lives is: love, joy, peace, not giving up, being kind, being good, having faith, 23 being gentle, and being the boss over our own desires. The Law is not against these things.” Galatians 5:22-23 NLV

When the ground of our hearts is prepared, and the seed is planted we will produce a harvest.

And those are the ones sown on the good soil. They hear the word and accept it and produce fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.” Mark 4:20 TLV

May we allow God’s word a place to grow strong in our lives.

Making Good Ground

I frequently refer to the parable that Jesus told about a farmer who went out to sow seed. Jesus, himself, said that if we don’t understand this parable we won’t be able to really understand any of the parables.

The sower sowed the seed on all kinds of ground. He didn’t just see the good soil and sow there but instead seed went on the hard ground, the rocky soil, the soil with weeds and thorns and also the good soil. Every kind of ground had the opportunity to be planted.

“A farmer went out to sow seed. While he was scattering the seed, some of it fell by the road. The birds came and ate all that seed. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where there was not enough dirt. It grew very fast there, because the soil was not deep. But when the sun rose, it burned the plants. The plants died because they did not have deep roots. Some other seed fell among thorny weeds. The weeds grew and stopped the good plants from growing. But some of the seed fell on good ground. There it grew and made grain. Some plants made 100 times more grain, some 60 times more, and some 30 times more. You people who hear me, listen!” Matthew 13:3-8 ERV

The same is true for us – the seed is the Word of God as Jesus said and the Word is available to all. We are the soil and it’s our responsibility to determine what kind of soil we will be. Frankly, I still have some thorns and weeds in my soil but am working daily to see that they are removed so the seed can grow and bring in a healthy harvest.

In the Old Testament we are given this admonition. “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” Hosea 10:12

It’s our job to break up the hard ground in our lives – we’re to pitch out the rocks and pull up the weeds so the seed has healthy soil to grow in.

Let God’s love soften the hard spots. Make good ground and watch the seed of God’s word produce a bountiful harvest.

A Few Days Away

Dave and I are on a short vacation. It seems a little silly to be retired and take a vacation but we do like going on adventures. We spent a day with dear friends, enjoying their fellowship and talking about the many things we have seen the Lord do in both of our marriages and families.

Yesterday afternoon we arrived in one of our favorite Arizona towns, Prescott. As kids, Dave and I both came here nearly every summer for Bible Camp.

It’s one of the most historic places in Arizona since it was the first territorial capitol. Today we’ll spend the day going to museums, sitting in the courthouse square and maybe even do a little shopping.

Doesn’t sound very spiritual does it? Maybe not, but it is completely Scriptural.

“He restores my strength. He leads me on right paths to show that he is good.” Psalm 23:3 ERV

A time of restoring – a time of refreshing.

It’s so great to be able to sit or walk or ride with Dave, making life plans and just laughing together. Our hearts are so filled with gratitude for all the Lord has done for us and in us. We know how blessed we are to have had over 50 years together and still be each other’s best friends and biggest cheerleaders.

Thank you for not grumbling because this morning’s time of sharing is a little late. I slept in.

“When I go to bed, I sleep in peace, because, Lord, you keep me safe.” Psalm 4:8 ERV

Be grateful for each day that the Lord gives you and if He has given you someone to enjoy it with, be doubly grateful.

This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be happy today! Psalm 118:24 ERV

On A Mission

Thinking about yesterday’s teaching this morning, I am reminded of Jesus’ words “I AM the light of the world, anyone who follows Me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.” John 8:12 ERV

Jesus’ mission was to bring light to the world. Just as He was there at the beginning when light was created, He came to bring spiritual light to a world that didn’t know God and His love.

“Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him. In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.There was a man named John, who was sent by God…John was not the light. But he came to tell people about the light. The true light was coming into the world. This is the true light that gives light to all people.

10 The Word was already in the world. The world was made through him, but the world did not know him. 11 He came to the world that was his own. And his own people did not accept him. 12 But some people did accept him. They believed in him, and he gave them the right to become children of God. 13 They became God’s children, but not in the way babies are usually born. It was not because of any human desire or plan. They were born from God himself…16 Yes, the Word was full of grace and truth, and from him we all received one blessing after another.” John 1:3-16 ERV

Christ’s mission was to restore relationship between God and man. He brought a message of grace and truth, love and forgiveness. He truly was a shining light in a dark situation. People were oppressed – blind, lame, leprous. They were living under the Law of Moses and no one, not one, could keep the whole law. It wasn’t possible. That’s why Jesus came to bring light and life to the world.

Since Jesus is the light of the world why did I spend yesterday’s blog telling you that we need to clean our chimneys? Glad you asked.

For God, who said, ‘Let there be light in the darkness,’ has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” II Corinthians 4:6-7 NLT

When I was a young girl, I received a watch for a birthday present. I was thrilled when I learned that it had luminous hands. It would glow in the dark, all night long.

Christians aren’t “the” light of the world, that of course is Jesus. But since He lives in us, we have His light shining in us and through us. We are a conduit of light, just like those luminous hands on my watch.

Christ’s mission was to bring light to the world; our mission is to reflect His light and let it keep shining, revealing God’s power and love.

We are on a mission!

Light the World

Before we downsized and moved into our tiny home I had a collection of oil lamps. They weren’t just for decoration, I used them when the power went out. It was important to keep the chimney glass clean. If not, the light would be dimmed by the buildup of soot and their usefulness was diminished.

Soap and warm water cleaned them right up. The cleaning took patience. The old glass was delicate and could be easily broken. Once cleaned, they needed to be dried, so the glass wasn’t spotty, it needed to sparkle.

Isn’t that the way it is for us.

People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:15-17 ERV

We are to be a light for the world, letting God’s love shine through us. But sometimes we aren’t as bright as we should be. Sometimes our chimney is dusty from lack of use, sometimes its coated with soot; regardless of the issue, we need a good cleaning.

“…just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.  27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault.” Ephesians 5:25-27 NLT

We all need to be washed by God’s word, our wicks trimmed, removing those things that keep us from burning correctly (by anger, jealousy, personal offence) and then made spot free so that we shine brightly with His love.

If necessary, spend some time being washed by God’s word and then go out and shine brightly so the world will see the Father’s love.

Out of Balance

The first of our three youngest grandchildren woke up about 30 minutes ago. She wanted to cuddle on the couch with me; 15 minutes ago Dave and the 2nd grandchild got up. She was cold and needed under the blanket. Still one grandchild, the boy, is sleeping upstairs in the loft.

It makes my morning a bit out of the norm. Quiet time cut short, coffee just getting made but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Just that things happen a little later than normal. But whether it’s routine or a break in routine God is always the same.

Practical.

God is practical. Everything He does has balance. Gravity, sunrise, sunset, changing seasons; earth, sky and water created before fish, plants and animals. Sun produces light and heat, the moon reflects light and no heat. Balance.

What’s out of balance and impractical about God is His unconditional love!

It doesn’t matter what we do or don’t do, God’s love for us will be the same. (Now that doesn’t mean He approves of everything we do, not in the slightest but He always loves us.)

People won’t go to hell because God hates them. They will go because they don’t accept His gift of love and His sacrifice for them.

Since we have Christ living in us it’s His love that should be flowing out of us.

” Together with these things, the most important part of your new life is to love each other. Love is what holds everything together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace that Christ gives control your thinking. It is for peace that you were chosen to be together in one body. And always be thankful…17 Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:14-17 ERV

The most important thing we can do is love each other. Love brings us to a place of peace. When we love we know that we have done all God has asked of us and God will do the rest. When we trust God to do what only He can do we can be thankful because He definitely has the talent and capability of handling His part.

We love not because those around us deserve our love but because God first loved us and so we can extend that love to others. It makes our Father happy to see us acting like Him.

I’m not asking you to go out and love the whole world, but I am asking that you extend God’s love to your co-worker, your neighbor, your child or spouse or sibling. Love unconditionally the way God loves you.

Now I’m off to love on some sweet grandkids.

Be Brave

Yesterday we saw how we can pray confidently when we are praying God’s word, relying completely on His promises.

That’s where bravery comes from. It’s a confidence in God’s word and His presence. Bravery isn’t the lack of fear. No, not at all. Bravery is trusting God in every situation. It’s what the Apostle Paul taught the Christians in Rome.

What can we say about all this? If God is on our side, can anyone be against us32 God did not keep back his own Son, but he gave him for us. If God did this, won’t he freely give us everything else? 33 If God says his chosen ones are acceptable to him, can anyone bring charges against them?” Romans 8:31-33 CEV

Many of our fears come from the “what if’s” in life. What if I’m not strong enough, not articulate enough, not accepted by the right people, not wise enough. When we trust in God and His love for us, knowing that He is on our side we can and will dispel each and every fear.

Trust the Lord! Be brave and strong and trust the Lord.” Psalm 27:14 CEV

What do you face that is unnerving causing you to be anxious and even fearful? Take these Scriptures to heart. The Bible is a powerful weapon against fear.

“God’s word is alive and powerful! It is sharper than any double-edged sword. His word can cut through our spirits and souls and through our joints and marrow, until it discovers the desires and thoughts of our hearts.” Hebrews 4:12 CEV

The Book of Joshua is a lesson in bravery. In fact, I have a book in my library, “Victorious Christian Living” written by Alan Redpath in 1955 that is such an amazing study in courage and trust.

Joshua was tasked with leading the Israelites, all million plus of them, into the Promised Land. They had physical armies to defeat, hostile land to work and weariness of mind to conquer. This is God’s command to Joshua.

Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you doRemember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 ERV

The key to bravery and overcoming fear is remembering God’s promises, (He cannot lie), and trusting Him in every situation.

“The officials were amazed to see how brave Peter and John were, and they knew that these two apostles were only ordinary men and not well educated. The officials were certain these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13 CEV

Peter and John were ordinary men, just like you and I, not well educated but they were brave when they faced the ruling officials, arrested and commanded not to speak the name of Jesus. Their faith was in God; faith grew and fear was abolished.

“So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.” Hebrews 4:16 CEV

We are living in a time where bravery and courage are needed. As we trust the Lord we will be strong, brave and very courageous!

Pray Confidently

The other night Dave and I were talking about prayer. There is a confidence when we pray that only comes for the Lord. We have learned that we don’t have to beg God for answers, we simply need to pray His will over any given situation. He tells us His will in His word.

“We are certain God will hear our prayers when we ask for what pleases him. 15 And if we know God listens when we pray, we are sure our prayers have already been answered.” I John 5:14-15 CEV

This morning, I am praying this for all of you.

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray over my many friends who are reading this. Some are experiencing great pain and sorrow in their lives, others are facing some of the greatest financial challenges ever, still others are seeing those they love hurt and relationships destroyed.

There are those who need to make right decisions, decisions of life and death, and those who need physical protection from very real enemies. Yes, Father and there are those who have waited years to see answers to prayer who are growing weary – it is for all of these that I am praying this morning.

Let Your peace rule in their lives; let them know Your presence, protection and provision. Let them see that You are here and have promised to never leave them or forsake them; let them rest and trust in You.

Thank You for Your answers; Your word; Your great love and thank You that it’s not You who has created these problems but that You are the problem solver. Thank You for hearing and answering this prayer, in Jesus name.

“You, Lord, are the light
    that keeps me safe.
I am not afraid of anyone.
You protect me,
    and I have no fears.
Brutal people may attack
and try to kill me,
    but they will stumble.
Fierce enemies may attack,
    but they will fall.
Armies may surround me,
    but I won’t be afraid;
war may break out,
    but I will trust you.

I ask only one thing, Lord:
Let me live in your house
    every day of my life
to see how wonderful you are
and to pray in your temple.

In times of trouble, Lord,
    you will protect me.
You will hide me in your tent
and keep me safe
on top of a mighty rock.” Psalm 27:1-5 CEV

Be confident in God’s word and in His love for you. He will never abandon you and He is always there to help in time of need. Come boldly to His throne room.
