It Takes Effort

This has been a very challenging morning…let me tell you a story.

The year is 1988, the place is Glendale, AZ. I had just been hired as the administrative assistant to the Dean of Students at a local community college. I was in charge of bringing the Student Handbook up to date and inputting all the information into the new computer program.

In our office was an older woman, thinking about it, she was probably the age I am now. She had worked for the community college for many years. She had no computer skills and so she had been transferred to our department where she could answer phones and have some student interaction.

On rare occasions she would need to log on to the computer and input some travel information. It was obvious that she dreaded this, and her frustration and temper would both rise.

One of the students found a poster, which they purchased and hung in our office, right next to her desk. “Hit Any Key”! She got a good chuckle out of that, we all did. This morning I felt like that sweet lady and the duck on the poster.

I have been battling this “wonderful piece of technology” in my lap for an hour and a half. I have tried to maintain a godly attitude and I have certainly been praying without ceasing. When I stopped to get my second cup of coffee these words came to mind, “study to be approved”.

“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” II Timothy 2:15 KJV

“Do your best to know that God is pleased with you. Be as a workman who has nothing to be ashamed of. Teach the words of truth in the right way.” II Timothy 2:15 NLV

For the last 30+ years my daily challenge is to spend more time focused on God’s word than on anything else. I don’t mean I sit and read the Bible for hours at a time and ignore the other daily responsibilities. No, I do the regular and the routine but in all that I do I want to see God’s word at work. I want to know my life and my attitudes are being molded by His word.

We should certainly apply as much effort to our spiritual growth as we do to improving our skill sets for work and recreation. It takes time to become proficient in computer skills, leather working, baking, driving a car, photography, flying a plane…

May I encourage you again to look for God in everything. Be teachable. Apply His word to every situation. Yes, it takes effort but being God-minded will keep you from picking up a sledgehammer and striking out.

Sorry – Wrong Account

Well, that was a surprising email!

Dave and I are waiting to be reimbursed for some warranty work. I received an email requesting our summer address and was given a date of when the reimbursement should be arriving.

I replied asking if that would be for both invoices and received another email verifying two invoices but the wrong amounts. This was quickly followed by another email, “Sorry, wrong account” and then listed the correct amounts for reimbursement.

Good.

Things like that happen every day, hundreds of times. People being improperly charged and then there are emails, phone calls (sometimes very heated calls) and finally correction and resolution.

Do you know things like that happen in our spiritual lives as well? We’ll be going along just as carefree and happy as you please when a thought, a condemning thought, comes to mind. It’s called our conscience, a guilty conscience, reminding us of something in our past that we are ashamed of, and we plummet into self-pity and unworthiness.

Stamp that memory with the words “Wrong Account” and return to the sender, who is the devil.

“But Christ was sinless, and he offered himself as an eternal and spiritual sacrifice to God. This is why his blood is much more powerful and makes our consciences clear. Now we can serve the living God and no longer do things that lead to death.

15 Christ died to rescue those who had sinned and broken the old agreement. Now he brings his chosen ones a new agreement with its guarantee of God’s eternal blessings!” Hebrews 9:14-15 CEV

Christ took our sins, all of them, and paid the price for our forgiveness. They were charged to His account and that account has been marked paid in full. Through His sacrifice we can live with a clear conscience.

“He destroyed the record of the debt we owed, with its requirements that worked against us. He canceled it by nailing it to the cross.” Colossians 2:14 CEB

The debt has been removed by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Our account, our conscience, has been cleansed!

People I Don’t Know

I was reflecting on my Mother’s Day. It was a good day but not typical. Communication with my kids and grandkids came in the electronic form, not the oh-so-special face to face hugs and kisses kind.

There were attempted phone calls but without a strong signal the calls dropped but the attempt was made and that warmed my heart. One call with a daughter was successful and it was the nice end to the day.

We worked in the morning, there’s quite a bit to do before we welcome campers at the end of the week. Mid-afternoon we enjoyed a nice lunch in town with three friends. And then this morning as I sat here thinking of that time of fellowship I began to wonder about our waitress.

Was she a working mom? How was it that she was scheduled to work this day and not be with family? Were we kind and compassionate to her? I hope we made her day more pleasant. She wasn’t able to be waited on, instead she served a room full of people.

“Finally, all of you should agree and have concern and love for each other. You should also be kind and humble. 9 Don’t be hateful and insult people just because they are hateful and insult you. Instead, treat everyone with kindness. You are God’s chosen ones, and he will bless you. ” I Peter 3:8-9 CEV

Treat everyone with kindness.

How often do we fall back on social media to help us make connections? We like or love a post or a photo. We say congratulations to engagements or births or weddings. All to people we don’t really know.

But our calling of kindness and compassion is greater than that. We are to see people the way the Father sees them. Remember Zacchaeus? He climbed a tree to get a glimpse of Jesus. Jesus was surrounded by a crowd as He walked the streets that day. So many were wanting to see the Teacher, the Miracle Worker. Zacchaeus wanted to see Him too.

“Jesus was heading his way, and Zacchaeus wanted to see what he was like.” Luke 19:3 CEV

Jesus noticed him. He stopped. Jesus spoke to Him. Zacchaeus’ life was changed.

“Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today you and your family have been saved, because you are a true son of Abraham. 10  The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.” Luke 19:9-10 CEV

Zacchaeus was a hard man to love; he was a tax collector and a cheat. Jesus was drawn to him, He looked for him and he was saved.

We were talking at lunch about people with lots of tattoos. One of our friends has many, each one tells a part of her story, her struggle and her victory. She said how much she enjoys sharing when someone asks her about why she got them. People may be judgmental at first but when they know the underlining story, they soften and meet a wonderful woman. They see the lady that Jesus loves!

Our world is filled with people who want to be seen. Meet them with a heart of compassion. You never know, you may end up liking people you don’t know.

A Loving Mother

Those of you who have been following my blog for any length of time know I had a loving relationship with my mom. This is my first Mother’s Day without her.

She died the end of May last year. I know she is in heaven, and I will see her again and we will have all of eternity to share the Father’s love.

When I think of the things that made her so special I feel like I am compiling a list of the Proverbs 31 woman. Mom learned to sew before I was born and I still have some of the little dresses she made for me and my daughters. She learned to knit when I was in grade school and I have sweaters and ponchos tucked away too.

Mom was a wonderful cook and baker. Everyone I knew growing up wanted an invitation to our house for dinner. She also was an excellent baker – there were no store-bought cookies or cakes – every school party she made and decorated dozens and dozens of treats.

My Dad was out-of-town for long periods of time; work kept him away. She kept the household accounts and maintained discipline for myself and my two siblings. She was an economist and could make a penny stretch.

She became one of my best friends. In High School, we had our differences but I definitely felt a closeness with her that my other friends didn’t have with their mothers. When I married and had children she filled the role of Grama whole-heartedly.

Mom always tried to help her friends and neighbors. When anyone came to the house to do work or make a delivery she didn’t let them leave without hearing about Jesus.

In her final years she look forward to going to heaven. She told me numerous times, “if I’m gone in the morning, tell them not to cry. Have a party because I am where I want to be”.

I offer this tribute this morning to all those Moms who are with us and those who we no longer are able to touch with our hands.

“Her children say good things about her.
    Her husband brags about her and says,
29 “There are many good women,
    but you are the best.”
30 Grace and beauty can fool you,
    but a woman who respects the Lord should be praised.
31 Give her the reward she deserves.
    Praise her in public for what she has done.” Proverbs 31:28-31 ERV

Mothers, grandmothers, women with mother’s hearts we have a special place of influence that no one else can occupy. May we shape lives with the love of Jesus!

Our Summer Home

We’re here!! Not completely set up yet, we’ll finish that today but we made it safely to the mountain yesterday. It’s good to be home!

I had so many things to be thankful yesterday. Not the least of which is my husband’s good driving. He is a PRO. I have no idea how many thousands of miles we have traveled in the last forty-nine years but with his skill and the Lord’s provision we have been almost 100% accident free.

It was so good to see the lake that holds so many memories of family. And then there were visits from friends within a few hours of arriving. It’s going to be a wonderful summer.

“Always be full of joy. Never stop praying. Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18 ERV

I will be praying that all your summer plans with be filled with joy and with wonderment.

One thing that we didn’t get done was setting up our cell booster, so we are operating with a very weak signal. I am praying this blog makes it out this morning.

I’m So Excited!

How’s that song go? “I’m so excited, I just can’t hide it. I’m about to lose control and I think I like it”.

Yes, that’s how I’m feeling this morning. The new refrigerator has been installed and is working properly and today we head to the mountain! I just wish all of you could go with us.

Did you wake up excited this morning? Do you have special plans for the weekend? Are you going to spend time with those you love? Maybe it’s a special anniversary or birthday you’ll be celebrating, or possibly a good report from your doctor. Whatever the event, large or small, it’s always better when we remember to thank the Father for his blessings.

“Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him. These good gifts come down from the Father who made all the lights in the sky. But God never changes like the shadows from those lights. He is always the same.” James 1:17 ERV

The Lord wants us to be excited about life. Why else would He fill it with wonder?

Sunrises and sunsets could be a dull gray. Waterfalls could be unimpressive trickles. The “Grand Canyon” could be just a subtle ditch. A child’s giggle could be monotoned. Without the blessings of the Lord our lives would be mundane and far from the abundant life He promised.

“God, your goodness reaches far above the skies. You have done wonderful things. God, there is no one like you.” Psalm 71:19 ERV

Be excited about what God has done, is doing now and will do with our future! He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Let me encourage you to embrace each day with joy. Wrap your arms around the morning and say, “Father, I don’t know all the details of the day, but I know that You have designed it for my good”.

“But you are his chosen people, the King’s priests. You are a holy nation, people who belong to God. He chose you to tell about the wonderful things he has done. He brought you out of the darkness of sin into his wonderful light.” I Peter 2:10 ERV

If we truly believe God’s promise of abundant life, we will search for those blessings like a kid at Christmas. Oral Roberts was known for his saying, “Something good is going to happen to you today”.

“‘I say this because I know the plans that I have for you’. This message is from the Lord. ‘I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future. 12 Then you will call my name. You will come to me and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will search for me, and when you search for me with all your heart, you will find me.'” Jeremiah 29:11-13 ERV

Search for the Lord. He has planned a good future for us. Now, that’s something to be excited about!

Cleaning Toilets

Yesterday I had a friend email me after reading the blog about my refrigerator. She said she would be praying everything got taken care of today. That meant a lot and then she reminded me of a story from many years ago.

I was part of our church’s ministry team and had recently started a morning Bible Study for our women. Those teachings were very similar to the ones I share with you each morning. This particular morning, I was sharing that if we keep our hearts and our spiritual ears open the Lord will minister to us any time or any place.

Earlier in that week, while I had been doing my regular housecleaning, the Holy Spirit prompted me to keep my attitude pure in all that I did. See if you can relate. We had a large ranch-style home, three children (12, 10, 6mos), a dog, horses, and I worked full time. I was grumbling as I was cleaning toilets.

The verse that came to mind, I believe, was this:

“And whatever you do [no matter what it is] in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus and in [dependence upon] His Person, giving praise to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17 AMPC

After Bible Study was over that morning one of the ladies, a new Christian and a new bride, came up to talk with me. She said she had never thought of me having to do all the things that wives and mothers do. Her next words made me chuckle, she said she just thought I sat home all day, reading my Bible and praying. She didn’t think that I would have to do the normal stuff.

That’s when I realized how important it is to share the way the Lord works in our everyday lives.

Jesus never came to separate Himself from us, He came to join us. He came to bring His power and provision to the mundane. He came to add his “super” to our “natural”.

“Follow my example: Even the Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people.” Mark 10:45 ERV

Christ came to serve others, to serve us. Yes, He got tired. Who else could fall asleep during a storm at sea? But His heart was always centered on serving. He knew that whatever He did should bring honor and glory to the Father.

Cleaning toilets, rocking a baby, wiping up spilled cereal, folding laundry, washing dirty faces, kissing little faces good night. Mowing the yard, spraying weeds, washing the car, board meetings, shoveling snow, changing the oil in the car.

Whatever we do in word or deed, do it all with an attitude of giving thanks to God!

Admitted Failure

This morning I’m going to share the thing that has been frustrating me that last couple of weeks.

It’s my refrigerator!

About six weeks ago our new refrigerator started to malfunction. The freezer section is perfect, a minus two degrees; the refrigerator, however, has issues. It only cools to forty-four to forty-six degrees. This temperature is too warm to store eggs, milk, and other items that can spoil.

No problem, it’s under warranty. We had a tech come troubleshoot the problem, reported it to the manufacturer, finally we received approval for a replacement and waited for the trucking company to deliver it so it could be installed.

All of this was to happen before April 28 because we were supposed to leave for the mountain on May 2. The refrigerator wasn’t delivered until April 29, one day after our scheduled install. We had to reschedule, and we couldn’t get an appointment until tomorrow, May 5.

We are late getting to our campground on the mountain where we will be hosting again this summer. Did I mention that I am frustrated? I hate being late for anything and especially this.

Each morning the refrigerator, the schedule, the entire situation is a partial focus of my prayer time. And if I’m truthful, I’m not really praying about it I’m complaining! There, I said it.

I talk with you each morning about trusting the Lord with all the issues in life – the big and the small. I quote the verse:

“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever;
Do not forsake the works of Your hands.” Psalm 138:8 NKJV

The Lord perfects or completes the things that concern me – this refrigerator has been a big concern. How foolish! I’ve allowed this cooling box to heat my emotions. I’ve allowed it to cause unrest in my soul and complaining from my mouth.

“God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him. 14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing. ” Philippians 2:13-14 CEV

The Lord is more concerned with my heart than with the temperature of my milk and eggs. Which one has a more eternal value?

Some of you may be reading this and saying “I can’t believe she is getting so upset about a refrigerator. The world has bigger problems than this.” And you’re right – I agree completely. So, learn from my error. Keep your heart right; I have repented, and I may have to do it again before this situation is resolved.

My verse for today is this:

“Help me to guard my words whenever I say something. 4 Don’t let me want to do evil
or waste my time doing wrong” Psalm 141:3-4CEV

I will guard my words and my heart and I choose to let God’s peace rule. I hope you do the same.

I Do It Myself

It’s not uncommon to hear little kids say, “I do it myself”. They are growing and learning and many times don’t want to accept help. They want to be independent. What we, who are older and wiser, know is that most of the time that attitude leads to a mess.

But before we are too critical of the little ones we need to look at our own statements of independence and there consequences. Hating to admit we need help is an expression of pride. I hesitate to ask Dave to open a jar of pickles – I can do it myself. Our cabinets are tall and he will volunteer to put things up for me and sometimes I find myself saying, “no that’s fine, I’ve got it”.

Why? That’s just silly but I do it all the same. We offer our time and our help as a gift, not as a criticism or an assertion of inability.

The Lord offers to help us in every circumstance of life but many times we’re like that small child standing with our hands on our hips and declaring I’ll do it myself. Through the years I’ve gotten more comfortable receiving from the Lord.

I heard one teacher contrast the difference between receiving and getting.

Getting implies working hard, striving, manipulating, using your effort to obtain. Receiving, on the other hand, is opening yourself to accept what someone else can do. You receive a gift with gratitude. Receiving from the Lord is accepting what Jesus has already done – that’s faith!

We don’t “work” to “get” from the Lord we walk by faith and accept His gifts of grace.

“You have accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord. Now keep on following him. 7 Plant your roots in Christ and let him be the foundation for your life. Be strong in your faith, just as you were taught. And be grateful.” Colossians 2:6-7 CEV

Here is our truth to live by today.

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Philippians 4:13 KJV

…to break it out further, here is the Amplified version

“I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]” AMP

Self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency – I can’t do it myself but when He helps all things are possible!

Sit Quietly

This morning is one of those times when sleep eluded me. Awake at 1 am and up at 1:45. It was time to get up, pray and let the Lord speak to my heart.

I cherish those times of sitting quietly in His presence.

I began to read some of my favorite passages and found myself in Colossians. It’s there I stayed; my heart was flooded with complete gratitude – there truly are no words to express my thankfulness.

“God made us free from the power of darkness. And he brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son. 14 The Son paid the price to make us free. In him we have forgiveness of our sins.” Colossians 1:13-14 ERV

Every sin I have ever committed and every one that I still will are forgiven!

Christ paid the price for our sin, once for all, we have been made right with God. I have been made right with God!

“At one time you were separated from God. You were his enemies in your minds, because the evil you did was against him. 22 But now he has made you his friends again. He did this by the death Christ suffered while he was in his body. He did it so that he could present you to himself as people who are holy, blameless, and without anything that would make you guilty before him. ” Colossians 1:21-22 ERV

No longer separated from, no longer enemies but friends. And not just friends – we’ve been adopted as His own. Christ died for me, to forgive me and then presented me to the Father as one who is holy, blameless and without guilt.

“You will show me the way of life. Being with You is to be full of joy. In Your right hand there is happiness forever.” Psalm 16:11 NLV

“Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! 16 So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved grace, and we will find help.” Hebrews 4:15-16 CEV

I am welcome in His throne room. I am invited to spend time in His presence. It’s important to sit quietly in His presence with no agenda or requests. In His presence is the fullness of joy!
