Look for the Signs

We live in a rural area; one where coyotes and javelina forage at night. Rarely do we see them during the day but we hear them at night – sometimes in the lot next door or across the street. We see the tracks of the javelina in the morning and before the fence went in, those tracks would be in our backyard.

The javelina eat our cactus and other desert foliage. The coyotes are on the prowl looking for some small rodent to prey upon. We are alerted to their presence by the barking of the neighborhood dogs. Their barking is constant and loud. They sense a danger and are trying to warn us.

It’s annoying when we are awaken from a sound sleep and even more so when we aren’t able to get back to sleep…

Why is it we get annoyed by warnings?

Right now, we are bombarded with warnings. Wash your hands, wear a mask, stay at least six feet apart. But before all this there were signs everywhere. At Disneyland we are told if we have heart problems, are pregnant, under a certain height, etc. we can’t ride certain rides. There are railroad crossing signs, the icy road sign, the do not touch wet paint or slippery when wet signs, the speed limit postings; we have an aversion to all of these and think they apply to others and not to us. So we go blissfully on our way ignoring the warnings and most of the time suffer no consequences. We will master our own universe!

Some people feel the same way about reading the Bible or attending church because they say it cramps their style. It’s just a bunch of rules. Following Jesus is never about rules, it’s relationship!

I may ignore warnings from people I don’t know but if Dave calls me and tells me to stay off the road because there’s a storm headed my way or to stay away from the wood pile because there’s a snake under it, I heed his warning. He loves me and I know he is concerned for my welfare.

When Jesus gave warnings and instructions throughout His ministry He wasn’t being mean. He was showing how much He loves us.

“A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest. 11 I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep.” John 10:10-11 CEV

Paul gives us instruction for living in a way that will keep our blood pressure down, help our heart stay healthy and will please God.

“Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don’t yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude. 32 Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ. Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. 2 Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.” Ephesians 4:31-5:2 CEV

As we go through our day let’s pay attention to the warnings around us and not ignore them.

God has a wonderful life designed just for us and He wants us to be safe!

Welcome the Day

Yesterday morning after I posted the blog, Dave and I headed over to the canyon’s edge for an unobstructed view of the sunrise. It’s amazing to watch the valley floor begin to lighten. The clouds were hanging low over the river, the pastures were green and a golden hue chased away the night’s shadows and welcomed the day.

As the sun rose over the mountains ridge we sat in the truck and thanked our heavenly Father for the beauty of His creation; we thanked Jesus for His sacrifice of death on a cross and we thanked the Holy Spirit for His constant companionship each and every day.

They, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, have an amazing impact in my life each day. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, I am forgiven and have a life that is reconciled to God the Father. The Holy Spirit leads, instructs and gives me guidance from God’s word. My heavenly Father has filled my life with power and purpose.

“For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.

7 We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” II Corinthians 4:6-7 NLT

God the Father has chosen to invest His power in our lives. He doesn’t want us living a defeated, contrary and worrisome existence. He wants our lives to be filled with hope, joy and peace.

“We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. 4 God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.” II Peter 1:3-4 CEV

The beauty of each morning’s sunrise is a testament to God’s faithfulness and power. He lights the world for the day’s activities and He has placed the light of His love in our hearts to be a ray of hope to all we meet.

Welcome the day with light of God’s love!

The Easter Ham

A newly wed bride was preparing ham for their first Easter dinner. She retrieved the 9×13 pan from the cupboard, placed a baking rack in the bottom, removed the ham from the refrigerator and then took a sharp butcher knife from the drawer and cut the butt end from the ham.

Her husband, who was standing there, politely stopped her and asked why she was cutting the end from the ham. The answer was clear, “That’s the way my mother always did it.”. To which he inquired further, “But, why?”. Unsure of the answer the bride called her mother.

“Mom, why do you always cut the end from the Easter ham?” Her mother replied, “Grama always did it that way so I did too.” “But why?” “I’m really not sure.”

So the bride phoned her grandmother. “Grama, why do you always cut off the end of the ham?” Grama thought for a moment and then with a chuckle she told her granddaughter “Sweetheart, it’s because my pan is too short.”

Oh my!

How many times do we do things just because we’ve seen someone else always do it that way? How many things are done out of tradition without a good solid basis and purpose?

“Jesus answered, “You are all hypocrites. Isaiah was right when he wrote these words from God about you: ‘These people honor me with their words, but I am not really important to them. 7 Their worship of me is worthless. The things they teach are only human rules.’ 8 You have stopped following God’s commands, preferring instead the man-made rules you got from others.” 9 Then he said, “You show great skill in avoiding the commands of God so that you can follow your own teachings!…13 So you are teaching that it is not important to do what God said. You think it is more important to follow those traditions you have, which you pass on to others. And you do many things like that.” Mark 7:6-13 ERV

So much in religion is done out of tradition instead of relationship. “That’s the way we’ve always done it”. While we have all this extra time in self-isolation may I suggest that we evaluate our relationship with the Lord. Get to know our Father. What are the things He likes, what brings Him pleasure? He tells us in His word.

The men Jesus was talking about in the verses above were so caught up in their traditions. The number of times they washed their hands and the cups they used were of utmost importance, more important than the way they treated their parents and other people. Their traditions were more important than what God said.

I remember one pastor that I worked with saying: “It is more important that we work with the Lord than for the Lord.” So many times we think we are working for God but the real motivation is for us to look good. When we work with God we’re not concerned about how we appear, we are concerned that what we do brings honor and glory to Him. He’s our sole focus.

Occasionally I have to evaluate the things I’m doing to make sure they honor the Lord.

“God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. That’s why he sent Christ to make us what we are.” Ephesians 2:10 CEV

Let’s not be like that young bride. Let’s establish traditions that glorify and honor the Father!

Encourage Each Other

As I opened the template to begin writing this morning I was “Wow-ed” by what I saw. Today’s post is number 1001! Oh my. What a privilege I have had, being able to share my thoughts from God’s word with you each day.

This morning I want to talk to you about encouragement.

We are self-distancing and it’s the right thing to do. However, I miss my kids and my grandkids. Yesterday our youngest daughter contacted us for a Facebook video call. It was so sweet – we were able to have one-on-one time with her and each of our three littlest grandkids. The first words out of Sam’s mouth, he’s 4 1/2yr, was “thank you for sending the baby chick racecar supplies, Besta”.

It’s hard not being close to those we love in challenging times.

Making baby chick racecars is something we do together. It’s becoming an Easter tradition. We were supposed to take Sam camping next week and were going to make them at the campsite. Since we had to cancel those plans, I sent the supplies to his mom so they can make them at home. It really tugged on my heart – I miss them all.

As much as I miss not having my children close I know God misses it even more. He is our loving and gracious Father; He wants his kids close so He can reassure us and calm our fears. He wants to hold us close and dry our tears. His door is always open; we can enter His presence anytime, any hour of the day and He’ll be there waiting.

“Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! 16 So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.” Hebrews 4:15-16 CEV

He understands and He is waiting for us to come!

Once we receive encouragement from our Father we should reach out to encourage others. A phone call, a text, a video chat or a note in the mail – all will be welcomed by the receiver. A friend of mine calls her grandkids and has a story time video chat. We all like to know we are being thought of – we all like to know that we are loved and missed! Send along a little prayer or simply say “I love you”. Those are words everyone likes to hear.

“When you talk, don’t say anything bad. But say the good things that people need—whatever will help them grow stronger. Then what you say will be a blessing to those who hear you.” Ephesians 4:29 ERV

Sometimes when we are in the midst of a trying situation our thoughts turn inward. Our thinking might be something like this – “I wish someone would call me and say something kind. Why do I always have to be the one to reach out to others?”. Let’s be honest, there are times when we all have a pity party or think selfishly. Get rid of that kind of thinking, it will destroy you! It will spread like a cancer.

Go to the Father, hand those thoughts over to Him and then follow Jesus instruction.

“Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” Luke 6:38 MSG

Give some encouragement today; it will bless them and bring a blessing back to you too.

Inhale Peace!

You may remember hearing me say that every morning when I talk with the Lord I thank Him for His love and mercy, goodness and grace. Focusing on these four characteristics of our loving, heavenly Father sets the tone for my whole day.

Subconsciously, after I thank Him I’ve noticed that I inhale a deep cleansing breath and as I exhale I am blanketed in peace.

I love that the Bible tells us God’s mercy is new every morning. Obviously, we need this on a daily basis. In myself, by myself, I fail to measure up on a daily basis. BUT God provides me with new mercy every morning. I start my day knowing that I have been accepted by Him. God’s mercy, not getting the punishment I deserve, frees me. I receive mercy not because of what I’ve done but in spite of it.

Inhale…peace.

Then there’s the grace of God, receiving from Him what I don’t deserve, which compels me to live a better life. God doesn’t love me because of the life I live, He loves me in spite of it. Because of that, I want my life to please my Father. I want to live a life that reflects the unconditional love that Jesus provided for me with His death.

When I see how great the mercy and grace of God are I find that I can live at peace. My soul can rest knowing that the Father’s promises provide for me in every situation. I can be free from worry, anxiety and thoughts of condemnation. I am accepted by my Father. I am loved!

I breathe in and am filled with His peace.

“Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing in heaven. 4 In Christ, he chose us before the world was made. He chose us in love to be his holy people—people who could stand before him without any fault. 5 And before the world was made, God decided to make us his own children through Jesus Christ. This was what God wanted, and it pleased him to do it. 6 And this brings praise to God because of his wonderful grace. God gave that grace to us freely. He gave us that grace in Christ, the one he loves. 7 In Christ we are made free by his blood sacrifice. We have forgiveness of sins because of God’s rich grace.” Ephesians 1:2-7 ERV (emphasis mine)

Let me ask you this. How are you caring for your children during this time of crisis? Are you trying to alleviate their fears, helping them with things they need, looking out for their safety, giving them reassurance that we will all get through this? Our heavenly Father is wanting to do the same for us. It’s who He is and what He does!

May you realize that you have been given mercy, grace and peace! You are accepted by the Father. You are loved!

Breathe in. Inhale His Peace.

Love and Beauty

I saw this picture many years ago and I was awed by the beauty of it. It was taken by a photographer from Federal Way, WA, Sarah Alston. Sarah is a friend of my daughter Kim’s and her artistry with a camera is wonderful.

As I looked at this picture and the others in the wedding album, I thought of the preparation, months and months of preparation, that go into planning a wedding. Everything has to be perfect. Every detail complete. The venue, the gown, the rings, the guests all require time and planning but most important are the two people who are preparing their hearts for a lifetime of love and commitment.

Is it any wonder that I relate this to our time of preparation as we await the return of the bridegroom, Jesus Christ? He says that He has gone to heaven to prepare a place for us and when it’s perfectly prepared He will come back and take us to our new home.

The prophet Isaiah paints this picture for us approximately four hundred years before Christ was born.

“The LORD makes me very happy. I am completely happy with my God. He dressed me in the clothes of salvation. He put the victory coat on me. I look like a man dressed for his wedding, like a bride covered with jewels.” Isaiah 61:10 ERV

The Apostle Paul writes about the marriage relationship a few years after Christ was crucified and ascended to heaven. He uses that union as an example of the relationship Christ aspires to have with each one of us. He desires to be our loving husband and provide for us, protect us and see to our well being. It’s our place to accept His proposal.

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish…32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” Ephesians 5:25-27, 32

Some day, in the not to distant future, we are told there will be a heavenly banquet. The Bible tells us it’s called the marriage supper of the Lamb. Our bride groom is taking care of all the details. We are all invited to be there; His love leaves no one out.

I hope you are excitedly waiting for His return. What a wonderful day that will be!

Hard Hearted

If we aren’t careful life has a way of making us calloused. Do you remember the days of three television networks? Those days when Ricky and Lucy and Rob and Laura slept in separate beds even though they were married. It was a time when the newscasters shielded us from the brutal graphics of war and harshness of life.

We were a more tender hearted people back then. We weren’t blinded to the situations of life; we felt compassion. Our hearts ached over injustice.

Tender hearted -> a condition where we can be easily touched by another’s adverse or favorable circumstances; an attitude that allows us to be open and accepting.

Hard hearted -> cynical, calloused, disbelieving, selfish and self-centered

Pharaoh was a hard hearted man. The plagues that came on Egypt were a result of his hard heartedness. He was unwilling to let the Israelites go and worship God. He was unyielding and stubborn. When Moses told him what plagues were coming, he actually had his magicians create the same plague just to prove he was in control. When Moses asked him when he would like one of the plagues to end his response was tomorrow.

“All right,” Moses answered. “You choose the time when I am to pray for the frogs to stop bothering you, your officials, and your people, and for them to leave your houses and be found only in the river.” 10 “Do it tomorrow!” the king replied.” Exodus 8:9-10 CEV

The Egyptians were suffering because their leader had a hard heart. He wasn’t willing to give in to the Lord. After several of the plagues had passed even his advisors encouraged him to let the Israelites go but he refused. A hard heart!

Jesus grieved over people with hard hearts when he was here on earth.

“Then he asked, “On the Sabbath should we do good deeds or evil deeds? Should we save someone’s life or destroy it?” But no one said a word. 5 Jesus was angry as he looked around at the people. Yet he felt sorry for them because they were so stubborn. Then he told the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his bad hand was healed. 6 The Pharisees left. And right away they started making plans with Herod’s followers to kill Jesus.” Mark 3:4-6 CEV

Verse 5 in the King James version says He was grieved because of the hardness of their hearts. The Pharisees were more concerned about keeping the law than they were about the man being healed. Their traditions meant more to them than the well-being of one of their neighbors.

Sad to say, we all go through times that our hearts are hardened. However, that can be remedied as we spend time in God’s word and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. The outer shell will crack and fall away revealing the tender heart that comes from the Father.

“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:31-32 KJV

When we focus on what God has done in our lives we will be more tender hearted to others. A heart transplant.

If we have to be hard hearted it should be toward sin and evil. Resist the devil (be calloused) and he will flee from you. As Jesus was hard hearted to sin and resisted temptation we should be too. He hated sin and the enemy who brought its effects into the world but he loved the sinner and did all He could to set them free, that’s why He died for us.

So, let me encourage you today to be tenderhearted to others and hard hearted to evil. This is a Christ-like attitude.

Built on Love

Years ago Dave and I had the privilege to share God’s love with the working cowboys of Arizona, Nevada and even into California. Cowboys would gather, sometimes for just a Friday night or a Sunday and other times for a long weekend at what we called Cowboy Campmeetings.

I miss those days. The time with friends, the great Country Gospel music, testimonies of what God was doing on the ranches and in the hearts of the cowboys and the Word. The teaching of the Word was so rich; lives were changed. Folks were saved, baptized and freed from past sin and guilt.

We made dear and life time friends. But the thing that touched me most was the sincerity and simplicity of the faith of those who were there. There was no pretense, no hypocrisy. It was just genuine love for the Lord. Yes, I miss those days.

Wonderful times!

A song we use to sing in Cowboy Church was “I keep falling in love with Him over and over and over and over again. He gets sweeter and sweeter as the days so by – oh, what a love between my Lord and I; I keep falling in love with Him over and over and over and over again.”

This was and is still my daily ambition. Falling in love with Him and getting to know the depth of His love for me. That’s what the Apostle Paul prayed for the Christians who lived at Ephesus nearly 2000 years ago. It is my prayer for us today.

“I ask the Father with his great glory to give you the power to be strong in your spirits. He will give you that strength through his Spirit. 17 I pray that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. I pray that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. 18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is. 19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.

20 With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of. 21 To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:16-21 ERV

But God

We had a wonderful time yesterday while on our family camping weekend. We visited a local attraction known as the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. The animals were amazing and we had a great time. (I’ll tell you more about this in another blog.) While feeding the animals I was particularly focused on some of the birds that we hand fed.

A few days back I reminded you that God’s love for us is so much greater than His love for the birds, and since it is, we can trust Him in all things. He is rich in mercy and love. Anytime things seemed stacked against us, remember this, BUT GOD! God is in control and He loves us so deeply. How can we not come out a winner when we know that no matter what happens BUT GOD?

“But God is rich in mercy, and he loved us very much. 5 We were spiritually dead because of all we had done against him. But he gave us new life together with Christ. (You have been saved by God’s grace.) 6 Yes, it is because we are a part of Christ Jesus that God raised us from death and seated us together with him in the heavenly places. 7 God did this so that his kindness to us who belong to Christ Jesus would clearly show for all time to come the amazing richness of his grace. 8 I mean that you have been saved by grace because you believed. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God.” Ephesians 2:4-8

There isn’t a problem too big or a reward so great that they aren’t solved or enriched by BUT GOD. The enemy of every Christian is satan and he sends many challenges and problems to discourage and destroy BUT GOD… Then we also have rewards and opportunities that look too good to pass up BUT GOD will show us if they are traps to get us off course or if they are really opportunities He is sending to bless us.

The old saying no ifs, ands or buts about it, was used to drive home a point that something was solid or unchangeable. The Lord is our miracle worker and nothing is impossible with Him.

“So what should we say about this? If God is for us, no one can stand against us. And God is with us. 32 He even let his own Son suffer for us. God gave his Son for all of us. So now with Jesus, God will surely give us all things.” Romans 8:31-32

As you go about your day, when things come up and they will, remember BUT GOD and know that He is for you so anyone or anything that is against you has to face no one else BUT GOD!

Working Together

I love to bake and quite frankly my family and friends like it when I do. They become the recipients of the cinnamon rolls, banana breads, dinner rolls and cookies. It works well. Most of the time I find myself working alone in the kitchen but I really enjoy having someone there with me, working side by side.

That’s the way it is with the things of life; the load is lighter, the chore becomes more enjoyable, when we have someone to do it with. Washing the car turns into a child like experience of playing in the water; yardwork becomes a nature lesson and house cleaning can become a dance party.

Can you imagine a loaf of bread with no leavening? It would just be crackers. All the ingredients are necessary to accomplished the desired end. A car may look pretty but without fuel it will go nowhere; garden soil can be properly prepared and planted but without water and sunshine the harvest will be limited.

The same is true for us who call ourselves Christians. We need one another. The Apostle Paul said we are one body, each with different parts, working together to glorify Christ Jesus, who is the head of the body.

“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Ephesians 4:15-16 NLT

There’s really no reason to be jealous of what someone else can do. We have all been given special talents and abilities to help those around us grow. We are God’s one-of-a-kind design and no one else can do our part as well as we can.

Ask the Lord to show you who you can help today. Who needs a word of encouragement, who needs a helping hand? When we work together we are an example of His love.
